2017 Canadian Pacific Women’s Open Preview

Canadian Pacific Womens Open

The LPGA Tour will head north of the border for the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open this week. It will mark the event’s first venture back to Ottawa, Ontario since 2008. The tournament will also serve as Canada’s national championship and be played over four rounds. The last time that the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open was held in Ottawa, it was Australian Katherine Hull that came out on top. Hull will not participate in the 2017 edition but there will be plenty of star power with So Yeon Ryu, Sung Hyun Park and the home favorite Brooke Henderson in the spotlight once again this week.

Details

Event: Canadian Pacific Women’s Open

Category: LPGA

Date: August 24-27

Venue: Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club, Ottawa, Ontario

Ariya Jutanugarn is the defending champion at this event after she won here in 2016. However, a lot has changed for Jutanugarn over the past few months as she has fallen to No. 3 in the Women’s World Golf Rankings. Jutanugarn is expected to be back to defend her title this week and it will be interesting to see if she can repeat here at a different course in Ottawa.

Past Five Winners

2016: Ariya Jutanugarn -23

2015: Lydia Ko -12

2014: So Yeon Ryu -23

2013: Lydia Ko -15

2012: Lydia Ko -13

What To Know About The Course

Scrambling and Putting statistics should once again be the most important numbers to consider this week. The field won’t necessarily have to dominate off the tee but strong Driving Accuracy numbers won’t hurt either. Ultimately, this tournament will come down to the golfers that are able to both consistently reach the greens and then sink their putts when they get the opportunity. Two of the last three winners of this event have produced a 23-under final score and it won’t be a surprise if we witnessed another birdie-fest this week.

The Field

This tournament is always among the strongest of the non-major championships and that won’t change this season. 20 of the top-25 players in the Rolex Rankings will be in action this week. So Yeon Ryu and Sung Hyun Park will be the co-sports betting favorites to win the tournament outright at +1100 odds but they will have some tough competition. Amy Yang and Shanshan Feng are in the mix at +1600 odds followed by Stacy Lewis at +1800 and Inbee Park at +2000 odds. Meanwhile, the Canadian Henderson will be available at a decent value as she is currently listed at +2200 odds to win this tournament outright.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Ariya Jutanugarn over Charley Hull

Jutanugarn has really struggled throughout this season but there are a couple of reasons to back her at this week’s event. First, she is the defending champion at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open. Second, she is available at an excellent value as she is listed at +5000 to win outright. Third, Jutanugarn doesn’t have to win the tournament, she just has to produce a better score than Hull in the head-to-head sports betting matchup in order to make us some money. Hull doesn’t have a top-10 finish since May so this looks like a safe bet on paper. Look for Jutanugarn to deliver her best result in a couple of months and produce a better score than Hull at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open this week.

Top-Five Pick: Brooke Henderson

It’s impossible to overlook the 2015 Canadian Press female athlete of the year as a smart bet to finish in the top-five this week. Henderson has shown improvement since she became the youngest golfer ever to win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at 18 in 2016 and she will be motivated to deliver a strong performance this week in front of her supporters. Henderson has the talent to win this tournament outright. Even if she falls short, Henderson should still be able to put together a top-five finish at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open this week.
