2017 Champions Tour Dick’s Sporting Goods Open Preview

Sporting Goods

The Champions Tour will continue in Endicott, New York with the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open taking place at the En-Joie Golf Club this week. A year ago, Paul Goydos captured the first of his two victories on the Champions Tour at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open. Now he will look to defend his title as one of the sports betting favorites to win the tournament for the second year in a row. Goydos will have some tough competition with a strong field for this week led by Bernhard Langer, Scott McCarron and Kenny Perry. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect from this event.

Details

Event: Dick’s Sporting Goods Open

Category: Champions

Date: August 18-20

Venue: En-Joie Golf Club, Endicott, New York

Goydos shot 67-66-69 for a 14-under 202 total and a two-shot victory over West Short Jr. Goydos went on to win the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in a wire-to-wire victory and he finished No. 12 on the Charles Schwab Cup money list behind Langer and Colin Montgomerie. Goydos carried over his momentum from last year with an impressive start to the 2017 season including his recent victory at the 3M Championship.

Past Five Winners

2016: Paul Goydos -14

2015: Jeff Maggert -14

2014: Bernhard Langer -16

2013: Bart Bryant -16

2012: Willie Wood -13

What To Know About The Course

The course was tweaked when the original relatively, flat round greens were changed to large, undulating greens that provide a tougher challenge for golfers. Driving Distance isn’t a major statistic to consider here but Driving Accuracy is important. The most important categories to consider are Scrambling and Putting numbers. Whoever performs at the highest level with both his irons and his putter should be in line to contend for the outright win this week.

The Field

Langer is the sports betting favorite to win the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open at +325 odds. Brandt Jobe is listed at +700, followed by Kevin Sutherland at +750 and Miguel Angel Jimenez at +800 odds to win outright. There is a major drop in terms of betting odds after that initial group with Kenny Perry at +1400, followed by Joe Durant and Scott McCarron at +2000. Goydos is available at +2500 odds to win this event for the second year in a row, which is pretty good value for the defending champion.

Langer enters the week as the money leader. He’s followed by Scott McCarron, Kenny Perry, Fred Couples and Brandt Jobe to round out the Top 5. Miguel Angel Jimenez is the only golfer that is above the one million mark in terms of earnings this year on the Champions Tour.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Paul Goydos over Stephen Ames

Ames isn’t a terrible pick for this week’s event but considering the sports betting odds it makes sense to fade him against Goydos. The defending champion at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open is coming off a playoff victory at the 3M Championship where he shot a record 60 in the second round. Now he has an excellent opportunity to turn back the clock and deliver at a course where he dominated last year. Goydos has the potential to win this tournament outright. At the very least, he should be able to produce a better result than Ames this week.

Top-Five Pick: Bernhard Langer

While Goydos is a strong bet in the head-to-head matchup, Langer is an excellent pick to finish in the top-five. Langer has finished in the top-10 in 10 of his 14 starts this season with four wins, including three major titles. He is already atop the Schwab Cup standings by nearly $1 million, which is a testament to his consistency this season. Langer will contend for the victory this week as an excellent bet to place in the top-five at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open.
