2017 EPGA Porsche European Open Preview

Porsche European Masters

Jordan Spieth’s final round en route to an Open Championship crown is still fresh in the minds of golf enthusiasts around the world. There is a good chance his incredible final round will be talked about for decades to come. However, while a number of the world’s top golfers take the week off following the third major championship of the season, the European Tour schedule rolls on in Germany with the Porsche European Open this week. The Beckenbauer Course in Bad Griesbach will remain the venue for the Porsche European Open for the third straight year with Alexander Levy returning to defend his title.

Details

Event: Porsche European Open

Category: European

Date: July 27-30

Location: The North Course, Green Eagle Golf Resort, Hamburg, Germany

Levy will be among the sports betting favorites in 2017 after proving he is more than capable of winning here a year ago. However, Levy will have some tough competition to deal with once again with Charl Schwartzel, Patrick Reed, Thorbjorn Olesen and Joost Luiten among the favorites to win the 2017 Porsche European Open. With so much focus on last week’s Open Championship, this week’s winner will need to be able to turn the page and focus on what it takes to win in Germany.

Past Five Winners

2016: Alexander Levy

2015: Thongchai Jaidee

2009: Christian Cevaer

2008: Ross Fisher

2007: Colin Montgomerie

What To Know About The Course

The North Course is an extremely long track so Driving Distance will be a key statistic to keep an eye on for this week’s Porsche European Open. It’s a little more difficult to get an idea of what to expect on an new course this week but both DD and Par 5 Performance should be good indicators of success. It should also be noted that experience hasn’t mattered all that much at past editions of this event. The big hitters that can excel on such a long course should have a distinct advantage.

The Field

Schwartzel and Reed are listed as the co-favorites for this week’s event according to the sportsbooks. Both Schwartzel and Reed are listed at +1400 odds to win. Meanwhile, Olesen is listed at +2200 odds to win outright, followed by Luiten at +2500. The defending champion Levy is listed at +2800 odds to repeat at the Porsche European Open. Jimmy Walker, Richie Ramsey and Paul Dunne round out the list of projected favorites for this week’s tournament. Some of the hometown favorites competing in this event might also be worth taking a chance on based on their experience and relative sports betting value.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Marcel Siem over Oliver Fisher

Siem is one of those hometown favorites that is worth taking a chance on based on his experience at this course. The Mettman, Germany-native is listed at +10000 odds to win this tournament outright and he offers pretty good value in the head-to-head sports betting matchup with Oliver Fisher. Siem has registered four top-10 finishes in his home country and he should be well rested and motivated after watching the Open Championship from home last week. Siem might not be a lock to finish in the top-10 but there is decent value betting on him to finish ahead of Fisher in the Porsche European Open.

Top-Five Pick: Alexander Levy

The defending Porsche European Open champion won’t be the sports betting favorite to win this week but that should make him an even better value. Levy has struggled on the PGA Tour but he placed 26th at the Scottish Open and he should be motivated to defend his title in Germany this week. Levy might not win this tournament for the second year in a row but he should be able to contend and there is decent value betting on him to finish in the top-five this week.
