2017 LPGA Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open Preview

Scottish Open

For the first time in the history of the Ladies Scottish Open, the event will be co-sanctioned by the LPGA and the Ladies European Tour. The ladies will compete on the same course that the men played at in the Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, Scotland with an increase in the purse size to $1.5 million. It will be the largest prize fund of any tournament on the LET outside of the major tournaments with a strong field of 156 golfers expected to compete. With the British Open right around the corner, the Ladies Scottish Open will kick off a highly anticipated two weeks of links golf on the other side of the pond.

Details

Event: Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open

Category: LPGA

Date: July 27-30

Location: Dundonald Links, Ayrshire, Scotland

The major changes that have taken place have resulted in an absolutely loaded field for this week’s Ladies Scottish Open, led by world No. 1 So Yeon Ryu. Ryu will be making her first start since the U.S. Women’s Open and it should be no surprise that she is the sports betting favorite to win this year’s event outright. There will be even more on the line in Scotland as this week and next are the final two events to earn points for the Solheim Cup before both Team U.S.A and Team Europe are finalized on the Sunday following the British Open.

Past Five Winners

2016: Isabelle Boineau -11

2015: Rebecca Artis -6

2014: Trish Johnson -7

2013: Catriona Matthew -8

2012: Carly Booth -4

What To Know About The Course

Experience should count for something this week with a number of entries lacking in that department heading in to the Ladies Scottish Open. That won’t be the case for many on the LET, including Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, who won this event in 2011 and 2013. Matthew is one of nine Scottish players in this week’s field who should benefit from experience and the support of the hometown fans. Meanwhile, Scrambling numbers and Putting statistics are among the key statistics to watch out for this week. Driving Distance shouldn’t be a major issue for this week’s field. The ability to capitalize on opportunities and sink putts will remain a significant key to victory.

The Field

The field for this week’s tournament has a combined 245 wins on the LPGA Tour including 43 major tournament victories. Matthew will be the hometown favorite after clinching two Scottish Open victories already, but she will be considered a sports betting long shot against an improved field. Matthew is listed between +12500 and +17500 odds to win outright depending on the sportsbook, so there is decent value betting on her to excel this week. Ryu will be the sports betting favorite to win outright at +600 odds. Meanwhile, Inbee Park is near the top of the board at +1100 with Shanshan Feng at +1200 and Minjee Lee at +1600 odds to win respectively. Sei Young Kim Stacy Lewis and Lydia Ko round out the list of sports betting favorites for this week’s tournament. Meanwhile, world No. 2 Ariya jutanugarn appears to be another decent value play at +2500 odds to win according to at least one sportsbook.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Catriona Matthew over Charley Hull

Matthew is clearly one of the most intriguing options on the board this week for a number of reasons. First, she has won here twice before. Second, she will be a crowd favorite competing in her home country. Finally, she will be motivated to prove her doubters wrong against an improved field now that this tournament is co-sanctioned by the LPGA. Matthew is an excellent value to excel this week and Hull might be the perfect option to fade against her. Hull has missed the cut in three of her last five events but she is still listed at +3300 to win this tournament outright. There is a good chance Matthew finishes ahead of Hull as an excellent value option in the head-to-head sports betting matchup.

Top-Five Pick: Ariya Jutanugarn

Jutanguarn has really struggled of late with a T-22, CUT, WD, CUT over her last four starts. However, Jutanugarn is far too talented to continue to struggle the way that she has to this point and the Ladies Scottish Open might be the perfect opportunity for her to get back on track. Jutanugarn has admitted that she loves the links style play that she will compete in this week and based on her recent results she seems overdue for a strong performance. At decent odds, Jutanugarn is an excellent value pick to place in the top-five at the Ladies Scottish Open this week.
