2017 LPGA Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic Preview

Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic

Last week marked the beginning of a crucial stretch for the LPGA Tour as there are three major championships in the next six weeks, followed by the Solheim Cup. Danielle Kang won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship by a single stroke over Brooke Henderson, whose possible tying putt came up a rotation short. Now, the LPGA Tour will head over to Green Bay for the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic, which is making its debut this year.

Details

Event: Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic

Category: LPGA

Date: July 6-9

Location: Thornberry Creek at Oneida, Green Bay, Wisconsin

This is the first year that the tournament will be played, so there is obviously no information on winning scores. This will be a new experience for most, if not all, of the field going into this event. That could throw your handicapping habits for a big loop this week.

The Field

In Gee Chun is the favorite for this week as the South Korean golfer continues to have a strong season. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that she hasn’t registered a win so far. That’s a bit of a concern in terms of sports betting. She’s been a much better bet in matchups and Top 5/Top 10 props. She is coming off a 54th place finish last week but has also placed second in two of her last four starts.

Brooke M. Henderson enters the week on a roll. She’s now up to fourth in the CME standings. She placed 11th three weeks ago, won the Mejier LPGA Classic for Simply Give and then placed second at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. She’s hot right now.

Ariya Jutanugarn, Minjee Lee and Moriya Jutanugarn round out the Top 5.

What To Know About The Course

The Thornberry Creek at Oneida is a par-72 that is 6,624 yards and it is known around Green Bay as the course of the Packers. Again, it is a relative unknown to the field, but it does have over 70 bunkers to play from and 11 water hazards that are all over the course, so ball-striking will be imperative. Also, it could take the field a few holes or even an entire round to figure out the speed of the greens. Those that are in the latter category there, probably won’t see the weekend.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Brooke Henderson Over In Gee Chun

Henderson seems like she is over her second-place finish at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship (where she was the defending champion). She said that she didn’t feel like she lost it, rather that Kang won it, which is a great way to look at it. She is rolling right now as Henderson finished T-11 at the Manulife LPGA Classic, then won the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give, then last week. On the other hand, Chun has been struggling. She has missed the cut twice in the last six starts, along with two finishes lower than 33rd (she was T-54 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship). She does have a couple top-two results and finished T-2 to Henderson at the Manulife LPGA Classic, but Henderson is on fire right now and it’s going to take a massive effort to finish over her.

Top-Five Pick: Ariya Jutanugarn

Jutanugarn missed her first cut of the year at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, so that surely can’t be going over well for her. She leads the LPGA Tour in birdies, so she can get hot. Jutanugarn is 40th in driving distance and 61st in driving accuracy, and 26th in greens-in-regulation, so she gives herself a lot of chances and she is a very good putter. After missing the cut last week, Jutanugarn is going to come out full of fire and it wouldn’t be a surprise if she won.
