2017 LPGA Tour Evian Championship Preview

Evian Championship

Lexi Thompson picked up her second win of the season as she won the Indy Women in Tech Championship at Indianapolis Speedway, and as winners do at the Brickyard, she was doused in milk and then kissed the bricks at the finish line. Now, the LPGA Tour will head to France for its fifth and final major of the season, the Evian Championship, which only became a major in 2013. It has always been held at the Evian Resort Golf Club since its inception in 1994, and besides being a major championship, it has a prize pool of $3.65 million.

Details

Event: Evian Championship

Category: LPGA

Date: September 14th – September 17th

Location: Evian-les-Bains, Haute-Savoie, France

Over the last four years since the tournament has become a major championship, the scores have been getting lower and lower, culminating with a -21 by Chun In-gee last year. That is the lowest score ever in a major championship for women and men.

Past Five Winners

2016: Chin In-gee -21

2015: Lydia Ko -16

2014: Kim Hyo-joo -11

2013: Suzann Pettersen -10

2012: Inbee Park -17

The Field

Sung Hyun Park of South Korea is the favorite for this week’s event and it’s easy to see why. She’s coming off a big win in her last outing at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open. But if you’ve been betting her of late, you’ve been cashing. Not only did she win last week but she also won a month ago (to the day) at the U.S. Women’s Open conducted by the USGA. Lexi Thompson shares similar odds as she’s also coming off a win at last week’s event. She has a win, a tie for 21st, a tie for 11th and a second-place result in her last four starts. After the favorites, there are a slew of golfers lumped together. The crew that’s inside of 20/1 includes Shanshan Feng, So Yeon Ryu, In Gee Chun and Brooke M. Henderson.

What To Know About The Course

The Evian Resort Golf Club was renovated to the tune of $8 million in 2012 leading up to the 2013 event, and it is now a par-71 that stretches out to 6,428. It is also about 1,575 feet above sea level, which adds another dynamic to this course. As players get used to this course, the scores have been getting lower, but it is still a tough player for the world’s best, who can find themselves roaming in the trees if they’re too far off the fairway.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Christie Kerr over Amy Yang

Kerr has been playing some very good golf as of late as she finished T-11 at the Indy Women in Tech Championship, and prior to that she had three top-five finishes in five starts. She is the underdog at +100 in this matchup against Yang, who is favored at -120, as she hasn’t finished higher than T-20 in her last three starts. Yang has the edge in previous results in this tournament as she finished T-8 here in 2015 and T-14 in 2016, while Kerr finished T-39 here last year; that was her best result since the Evian Championship became a major. However, this is all about going with the player that is in form, and that would be Kerr, who is always one of the most consistent players on the LPGA Tour.

Top-Five Pick: Chun In-gee

In-gee is coming off a solo second at the Cambia Portland Classic, but overall, it has been a disappointing year for the defending Evian Championship winner. She hasn’t won a tournament this season, although she is eighth in winnings. She won’t shoot a -21 here again, but In-gee will have enough confidence to get into the top five and from there, anything can happen. Prior to Portland, she also finished T-3 at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open.
