2017 LPGA Volvik Championship Preview

The LPGA will make its first of two stops in Michigan this week for the LPGA Volvik Championship. This is the second edition of this event after the LPGA Tour made its debut in Ann Arbor last season. 83 of the top 100 players in the world will make their way to Michigan for this week’s event including six of the 11 tournament winners so far this season. Ariya Jutanugarn absolutely dominated here in the inaugural edition of the LPGA Volvik Championship last year when she won by five strokes. Jutanugarn isn’t nearly as hot as she was a year ago at this time but she is still a co-favorite to repeat and win this tournament for the second year in a row.

Event Details

Event: LPGA Volvik Championship

Category: LPGA

Date: May 25-28

Location: Travis Pointe Country Club, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Jutanugarn hasn’t been nearly as dominant on the LPGA Tour this season and that has opened the door for a number of different winners. Four different countries were represented among the top-five finishers here last year so this tournament could be wide open once again. Nine of the players that finished in the top-10 last year will be back so it will be interesting to see which golfers can build off last year’s success.

Past Winner

2016: Ariya Jutanugarn -15

What To Know About The Course

Christina Kim set the tournament-low 18-hole score when she fired a 64 here a year ago to post an eight-under par score. It won’t be a surprise if somebody bests her single-round score in the second edition of this tournament. Greens In Regulation was an important statistic last year and that should be the case again this year. Putting numbers are always a staple for success on the LPGA Tour so expect the same thing this week at the LPGA Volvik Championship.

The Field

Jutanugarn is listed along with Lexi Thompson as the co-favorites to win the LPGA Volvik Championship at +600 odds. In Gee Chun, So-Yeon Ryu and Shanshan Feng round out the top five picks on the board according to the sports betting odds for this week’s event. Lydia Ko is the one notable absent from this week’s field but that doesn’t mean the competition won’t be stiff. Sung Hyun Park, Suzann Pettersen, Minjee Lee and Brooke Henderson are among the other notables that should have a legitimate shot at contending for the outright win this week in Michigan.

Taking a look at the Race for the CME Globe, So Yeon Ryu is our current leader with 1680 points. She is followed by Ariya Jutanugarn, who has 1578 points. Lexi Thompson, Cristie Kerr and In Gee Chun round out the top five. Surprisingly, Lydio Ko is not even in the Top 10.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Brooke Henderson over Minjee Lee

Lee registered a DQC at the Kingsmill Championship last week and while she should bounce back with a better result this week we would rather bet against her with Henderson. The young Canadian is coming off back-to-back top-15 finishes but is still searching for her first win of the 2017 season. Henderson might not win this week but she should contend for the victory and ultimately finish ahead of Lee in the head-to-head sports betting matchup.

Top-Five Pick: Ariya Jutanugarn

Jutanugarn might not be racking up the wins at a ridiculous rate but she has been incredible consistent overall with eight top-nine finishes, including three runner-up results. Jutanugarn led the LPGA Tour with five wins a year ago so it’s likely only a matter of time before she breaks through and starts producing victories. After winning the inaugural edition of this tournament in 2016, Jutanugarn should be a strong pick to repeat here in 2017. At the very worst, Jutanugarn should be a lock to finish in the top-five at the LPGA Volvik Championship.
