2017 PGA Memorial Tournament Preview

Memorial Tournament

With the Texas swing wrapped up the PGA Tour will shift to Dublin, Ohio and the Muirfield Village Golf Club this week for The Memorial. This week’s event will mark the final tune-up for many of the top-tier players as they get set for the US Open. That will mean an impressive field of competition with Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm and Jason Day among those in attendance this week. D.J. will be the obvious sports betting favorite for this week’s tournament. However, he should face some tough competition with a total of $8.7 million in prize money on the line this week in Ohio.

Event Details

Event: The Memorial Tournament

Category: PGA

Date: June 1-4

Location: Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio

If the last three editions of this tournament are any indication then we might see The Memorial go down to the wire this weekend. William McGirt won here last year in a playoff, which marked the third straight edition of this tournament that was decided in a playoff. With the US Open now just two weeks away, it will be very interesting to see if the top contenders can clinch a victory this weekend.

Past Five Winners

2016: William McGirt -15 (Playoff)

2015: David Lingmerth -15 (Playoff)

2014: Hideki Matsuyama -13 (Playoff)

2013: Matt Kuchar -12

2012: Tiger Woods -9

What To Know About The Course

The conditions are expected to be fine this week in Ohio so you likely won’t have to worry about weather taking its toll on the tournament. The focus for success this week will likely be Driving Accuracy as avoiding the rough will be very important. The average Driving Distance of the last 10 winners here is ranking 40.5. Meanwhile, the average Driving Accuracy of the last 10 winners is ranking 14.2. Par 4 performance will be another important number to keep an eye on this week. Greens In Regulation should also factor heavily in to the success of the top performers at Muirfield this week.

The Field

10 of the world’s top-15 players will be in attendance at Muirfield this week. Johnson is the obvious sports betting favorite at +600 odds and while he will have some tough competition there is a stiff drop off after him according to the odds. Spieth and Rahm are both listed at +1200 odds to win this event outright. Meanwhile, Day is listed at +1400 odds followed by 2014 Memorial winner Hideki Matsuyama at +1600 odds. Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar round out the list of sports betting favorites for The Memorial this week.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Jon Rahm over Jordan Spieth

Even after a runner-up finish at the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational at Colonial last week it’s hard to back Spieth. Despite that he had some success as a hometown favorite in a relatively weak field, Spieth has missed the cut in three of his last five starts overall. Meanwhile, Rahm’s game is perfectly suited for a course like Muirfield where he will be able to unleash his driver and thrive on the greens with his short irons. Spieth might still deliver a quality finish this week at Colonial. However, we like Rahm to edge him out in the head-to-head sports betting matchup at The Memorial.

Top-Five Pick: Dustin Johnson

After registering three wins in a row and then a runner-up finish in the Wells Fargo Championship, Johnson delivered a 12th-place finish in the Players Championship that was a career-best result. A relatively poor finish at the Byron Nelson Championship forced him to settle for a 13th place finish but that should serve as added motivation this week with a chance for D.J. to bounce back in a big way. With the US Open now right around the corner, look for Johnson to be at his best and contend for the outright win as a lock to finish in the top-five in The Memorial this week.
