2017 PGA Tour RBC Canadian Open Preview

RBC Canadian Open

The fact that Jordan Spieth is the 2017 Open champion shouldn’t be a surprise. However, the way in which he won at Royal Birkdale is something that will be talked about for a long time. Spieth shocked the world with a dramatic final round in which he conceded the lead early only to fight back with one of the most impressive performances that golf fans have witnessed at a major tournament in recent years. Spieth will continue to dominate the headlines this week as the PGA Tour moves from across the pond back to North America for the RBC Canadian Open from the Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

Details

Event: RBC Canadian Open

Category: PGA

Date: July 27-30

Location: Glen Abbey Golf Club, Oakville, Ontario, Canada

The RBC Canadian Open is the third-oldest national open dating all the way back to 1904. With the majority of the top golfers in the world still recovering from last week’s Open Championship, the majority of the big names at this event are associated with the title sponsors. Ironically, that list includes last week’s runner-up Matt Kuchar, who was the runner-up to Spieth at the Open Championship. Kuchar will be listed among the sports betting favorites to win this tournament along with World No. 1 Dustin Johnson.

Past Five Winners

2016: Jhonattan Vegas -12

2015: Jason Day -17

2014: Tim Clark -17

2013: Brandt Snedeker -16

2012: Scott Piercy -17

What To Know About The Course

The numbers indicate that power should be favored over accuracy at this course. Jhonattan Vegas ranked 11th in Driving Distance when he won here a year ago, while Day ranked second in DD when he won the 2015 edition of this tournament. Meanwhile, Greens In Regulation is another statistic to consider for this week’s tournament after Vegas placed fifth in that category a year ago. Five of the previous six winners at this course have ranked inside the top-10 in various Putting statistics.

The Field

D.J. will headline this year’s field as a +700 pick to win the RBC Canadian Open outright. Meanwhile, the sportsbooks are expecting that Kuchar will put last week’s disappointment behind him in a hurry and rebound as a +1100 pick to win this tournament outright. Charley Hoffman is listed at +2500 odds followed by Tony Finau at +3000 and Bubba Watson at +3300 odds. The defending champion Vegas is expected to be a long shot to repeat here this year as he is listed at +12500 odds to win outright.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Ian Poulter over Matt Kuchar

The fact that Kuchar is listed at +1100 odds makes him a good option to fade this week as he attempts to get over what happened to him last week at Royal Birkdale. Kuchar seemed primed to celebrate a major championship victory before Spieth turned it up and shocked the world with an incredible final stretch to steal the Claret Jug. Meanwhile, Poulter could be in excellent position to contend this week after placing in the top-35 in each of his last four starts. That run includes a runner-up finish at THE PLAYERS Championship and a 14th place finish at The Open. If Poulter can continue his trong play this week then he should be a good value bet to place ahead of Kuchar at the RBC Canadian Open.

Top-Five Pick: Dustin Johnson

Four of the seven course winners at Glen Abbey won here as the sports betting favorite with Day, Brandt Snedeker, Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods all capturing victories at the Canadian Open. There is a very good chance that D.J. continues that trend as the betting favorite to win this year’s edition of the RBC Canadian Open. Johnson led the field in Driving Distance here last year en route to a runner-up finish behind Vegas. Johnson’s course form figures read W-2-2 and considering his recent form overall he should be a lock to finish in the top-five this week.
