2017 PGA Tour TOUR Championship Preview

Jordan Spieth

Marc Leishman stormed to a five-stroke win at the BMW Championship and he is one of five players that have a chance to win the FedEx Cup at the TOUR Championship this week. Jordan Spieth leads the standings, followed by Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Leishman and Jon Rahm, and these five players have the best chance to win the FedEx Cup out of the field of 30 slated to tee it up at East Lake: win the tournament, and you win the Cup.

Details

Event: TOUR Championship

Category: PGA

Date: September 21st – 24th

Location: East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, Georgia

Rory McIlroy won with a -12 score last year, and -13 has been the lowest score to win at East Lake since 2007 (Henrik Stenson got there in 2013). Last year was the first time that this tournament was played with the nines reverse: the current ninth hole is a par-3, which was the 18th hole. Now, the 18th hole is a par-5, which could spice things up down the stretch.

Past Five Winners

2016: Rory McIlroy -12

2015: Jordan Spieth -9

2014: Billy Horschel -11

2013: Henrik Stenson -13

2012: Brandt Snedeker -10

The Field

The field is again stocked with the best golfers in the world as we head down the home stretch of the season. Jordan Spieth is again favored to win it all (he was favored at last week’s event) and while he’s played well of late, he hasn’t brought home the bacon. He placed seventh last week a pair of Top 2’s before that. He’s been competitive, though, and is a safer bet for the Top 10. Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler are hot on his heels. Johnson has cooled off of late with an 18th and 33rd in his last two outings. He has been on fire of late with six results in the Top 13 in his last eight starts. The only other golfer on the board inside of 10/1 is Jon Rahm, although Jason Day and Justin Thomas are near by as you’ll see below.

What To Know About The Course

East Lake opened in 1904 and is the oldest golf course in Atlanta, and it has been the home of the TOUR Championship since 2004. It is a par-70 that stretches out to 7,385 yards, and we can only hope that the scores are close by the time the field gets to that 18th hole, which is about 550 yards. With the firepower that these players have now, the chance to go for it in two can set up a lot of different scenarios.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Rickie Fowler over Dustin Johnson

Fowler is rated at +100 to -120 for Johnson, who finished T-33 at the BMW Championship. Fowler finished T-2 there, and he has finished in the top 10 in three of his last five starts. Johnson is more likely to win the event and has finished T-5 and T-6 in his last two trips to East Lake. But Fowler has been more consistent this season and will be around the top of the leaderboard at the end of the event.

Top-Five Pick: Justin Rose +310

Rose finished T-2 at the BMW Championship with a final round of 65, and he has finished T-10, T-10 and T-2 in his last three starts. He is also going to a place where he has had a very good history as Rose has finished solo sixth, T-4 and T-2 in his last three starts at East Lake. He didn’t make it to the TOUR Championship last year, but Rose has found something at the end of the season and he has to be considered a darkhorse to win this tournament. He is eighth in the standings and needs a lot to happen to win the FedEx Cup, but don’t count him out just yet.
