2017 Valero Texas Open Preview

The PGA Tour shifts to San Antonio, Texas and the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course for this week’s Valero Texas Open. It has been a couple of weeks since Sergio Garcia finally delivered his memorable first win at the 2017 Masters. After Wesley Bryan was victorious in a relatively limited field at the RBC Heritage last week there will be plenty of big names at this week’s Valero Texas Open.

Event Details

Event: Valero Texas Open

Category: PGA

Date: April 20-23

Location: TPC San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas

Charley Hoffman will return as the defending champion at this tournament. He will have his work cut out for him with some tough competition. Matt Kuchar, Brooks Koepka and Ryan Moore are among the notables that will be looking to take down Hoffman and win the Valero Texas Open this week.

Past Five Winners

2016: Charley Hoffman -12

2015: Jimmy Walker -11

2014: Steven Bowditch -8

2013: Martin Laird -14

2012: Ben Curtis -9

What To Know About The Course

The Greg Norman-designed course is littered with trees and avoiding them will be important. Power off the tee should be important but it won’t matter nearly as much if the golfer isn’t accurate. Driving Accuracy should be a key stat to consider. Meanwhile, Par 5 Performance is another stat that is likely worth considering based on how the course plays out. It also won’t hurt to have a hot putter this week at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course.

The Field

Hoffman is the defending champion at this tournament but he won’t be the sports betting favorite to win outright. That tag belongs to Kuchar, who is listed at +1800 odds to win. Meanwhile, Hoffman is listed at +2000 odds to repeat. Koepka and Moore are next in line according to the sportsbooks at +2500 odds. Meanwhile, if you are looking for a decent value bet you might want to consider the 2015 winner Jimmy Walker. Walker is listed at +2800 odds to win this tournament for a second time.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Jimmy Walker over Brooks Koepka

Speaking of strong value betting on Walker, it wouldn’t hurt to take him opposite Koepka in the head-to-head sports betting matchup. Walker has already proved he can win here before while Koepka’s play has been extremely inconsistent since he last won in November. Koepka had missed four of six cuts before a strong performance at the Masters. We are banking on him struggling just enough this week to open the door for Walker to finish with the best score at the Valero Texas Open.

Top-Five Pick: Matt Kuchar

Kuchar heads in to this tournament after a pair of strong finishes at the Masters and Hilton Head. Kuchar finished fourth at the Masters and then just narrowly missed out on another top-10 finish in last week’s RBC Heritage. Kuchar is playing with a ton of confident this week and he did record a top-five finish here back in 2014. Look for another strong performance from Kuchar this week as he contends for the outright win at the Valero Texas Open.
