2018 Champions Tour Boca Raton Championship Preview

Champions Tour

The Champions Tour returns to Boca Raton, Florida and the Broken Sound Club for this week’s Boca Raton Championship. Previously known as the Allianz Championship, this will be the first year the tournament will be played under a different name after the controversial German insurance company pulled its sponsorship. Despite the change, the field for this year’s event will once again be very strong including 2017 Champions Player of the Year Bernhard Langer, John Daly and Fred Couples among the notable entries. Langer enters the weekend as the favorite. Let’s take a closer look at this event and determine who is the best bet to win it all.

Event Details

Event: Boca Raton Championship

Category: Champions

Date: February 9th-11th

Location: Broken Sound Club, Boca Raton, Florida

Scott McCarron is another notable name that will compete in this year’s Boca Raton Championship as he attempts to successfully defend his title after winning here last year. McCarron sank a six-foot eagle putt on the final hole to win this tournament by one shot in 2017. While he isn’t listed as the odds-on favorite to win this event, McCarron is among the betting favorites and should be in the mix once again this weekend.

Past Five Winners

2017: Scott McCarron -17

2016: Esteban Toledo -11

2015: Paul Goydos -12

2014: Michael Allen -18

2013: Rocco Mediate -17

What To Know About The Course

The Broken Sound Club course features greens that have been voted the best on the Champions Tour by officials and players for the past 11 years. Putting statistics will once again be key to success at this year’s event. Meanwhile, the course is filled with 75 bunkers so while Driving Distance isn’t necessarily important, Accuracy off the tee and on Approach shots will be. Scrambling numbers will also once again be very important when it comes to separating a winner from the rest of the field.

The Field

This will be the first full-field event of the Champions season with a number of big names on hand with many calling it their favorite event of the year. Langer is the obvious sports betting favorite to win this tournament outright at +400 odds but he will face some tough competition this week. Miguel Angel Jimenez is right behind him at +500 odds followed by McCarron and David Toms at +900 odds to win outright. Colin Montgomerie, Kevin Sutherland, Billy Mayfair and Doug Garwood round out the list of the top sports betting favorites for this year’s tournament.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Paul Goydos over Lee Janzen

Goydos is coming off a top-25 finish last week and should be confident heading in to an event that he won back in 2015. The 53-year-old placed 24th at this event in 2016 and finished in 16th place here last year so he has been a staple in the top-25 in the Boca Raton Championship dating back to his win. Meanwhie, Lee Janzen is listed at slightly better odds to win this year’s tournament despite some slightly worse performances than Goydos here over the last couple of years. There is good value betting on Goydos to win this head-to-head sports betting matchup, which makes it an even more appealing opportunity.

Top-Five Pick: Bernhard Langer

The reigning Champions Player of the Year hasn’t won this tournament since 2010 but it’s hard to completely overlook him as a contender at Boca Raton. Langer opened the season with a top-20 finish at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship Hualalai so the urgency will be there to build on that performance with an even better result this week. Langer has all of the tools to contend for the outright win in Florida. He should be a relatively safe pick to finish in the top-five in this year’s Boca Raton Championship.
