2018 PGA AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament Preview

The best golfers in the world will make their way back to Pebble Beach, California and the Pebble Beach Resort for this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament. Jordan Spieth will return to the site of his runaway victory last year with a difficult test ahead of him as he attempts to repeat at this event. Spieth will have to take down to men listed ahead of him in the world rankings in Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson will make his 22nd appearance in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a chance to match Mark O’Meara for the most wins ever at this course with a fifth victory there this week.

Event Details

Event: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Category: PGA

Date: February 8th-11th

Location: Pebble Beach Resort, Pebble Beach, California

In addition to Spieth, D.J., Rahm and Mickelson, Rory McIlroy will be on hand for this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am as he makes his first career start at this course. McIlroy will be joined by Jason Day, who is fresh off a victory at the Farmers Insurance Open. With so many big names teeing off this week in California, there is plenty of reason for intrigue as we look forward to seeing who will come out on top on Sunday.

Past Five Winners

2017: Jordan Spieth (-19)

2016: Vaughn Taylor (-17)

2015: Brandt Snedeker (-22)

2014: Jimmy Walker (-11)

2013: Brandt Snedeker (-19)

What To Know About The Course

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is staged over three courses including Spyglass Hill, Monterey Peninsula and the Pebble Beach host course. While the Pebble Beach course needs no introduction, Spyglass differs from the other two venues in that it is largely tree-lined and is the toughest of the three. If you get drawn to play there on a windy day, then accuracy will become that much more important both off the tee and on approach shots. It’s also important to note that the greens at Spyglass play slightly faster than those at the other two courses. Spieth drove the ball here well last year, ranking 25th in Driving Distance and 14th in Driving Accuracy when he won this tournament by four strokes. Meanwhile, nine of the last 12 winners have ranked inside the top-six for greens hit so keep Greens In Regulation stats in mind when evaluating the field for this week’s tournament.

The Field

While Spieth is the defending champion, he is currently listed fifth in line when it comes to the sports betting odds to win this tournament outright. Johnson is the betting favorite at +600 odds. Day, Rahm and McIlroy are all listed at +1000 odds. Meanwhile, Spieth is currently listed at +1200 to successfully defend his title at this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Mickelson is available at +2800 odds to win. Gary Woodland, Paul Casey, Matt Kucher and two-time event winner Brandt Snedeker round out the list of betting favorites for this week’s PGA tournament.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Jordan Speith over Rory McIlroy

McIlroy is playing this event for the first time and he didn’t necessarily impress in his previous appearance at this course when he missed the cut at the 2010 U.S. Open with rounds of 75 and 77. McIlroy hasn’t played here since so while he has performed well overall of late it’s hard to trust him to contend for the win at Pebble Beach this week. Meanwhile, the fact that he is listed at better odds than Spieth makes this the perfect scenario to bet against him at good value when it comes to the head-to-head sports betting matchup. Spieth dominated at this tournament a year ago and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get his season on track early on. While he might not repeat and win this tournament, Spieth should be able to produce a better score than his counterpart McIlroy this week.

Top-Five Pick: Dustin Johnson

It’s hard to bet against D.J. based on his overall numbers and the fact that he has performed at a high level on courses that feature the same unique poa annua greens that will be featured at Pebble Beach this week. Johnson has already won this tournament twice and he has finished in the top-five in three of his last four appearances here. While consistency has been an issue at times throughout his career, Johnson has all of the tools to contend for the outright win this week while chasing another trophy. At the very least, Johnson should be able to finish in the top-five at Pebble Beach.
