As the 2025-26 MLB offseason progresses, teams across the league are making strategic additions to their rosters. While much of the attention has been directed at marquee names, there remains a significant group of veteran and lesser-hyped free agents who could provide meaningful contributions in the right situations. Whether through experience, positional need, or clubhouse presence, these players might offer value beyond the headlines.

One such player is veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto. Though no longer in his prime, Realmuto remains a strong defensive presence behind the plate and brings postseason experience. For teams needing stability at catcher, especially with young pitching staffs, Realmuto could serve as both mentor and facilitator.

Another high-profile name with an uncertain market is Max Scherzer. Coming off injuries and now into his 40s, Scherzer may no longer be a long-term ace, but could be a short-term rotation stabilizer or playoff option for a contending team. A team with championship aspirations and a deep bullpen might use him strategically throughout the season.

Justin Verlander falls into a similar category. Though nearing the end of his career, his competitive edge and postseason track record make him a potential asset in a support role. His presence could also benefit a developing staff.

Slugger Marcell Ozuna is another free agent who brings offensive prowess. In the right American League setting where he can primarily serve as a designated hitter, Ozuna could bolster middle-of-the-order production. His bat remains capable of delivering power in clutch moments.

On the pitching front, Lucas Giolito represents a bounce-back candidate. Teams looking for rotation depth who believe in their pitching development infrastructure may view him as a worthwhile investment. With mechanical adjustments and the right coaching support, Giolito could return to form.

These under-the-radar names illustrate the depth of talent that remains available. While they might not grab headlines, their specific skill sets and veteran presences could align well with certain clubs’ objectives in 2026. As front offices evaluate needs heading into spring training, these free agents provide viable paths to roster improvement.
