205 Live Recap: Ground-Based Offense

This week on 205 Live, the scheduled matches featured some of the best talent that the brand has to offer. Jack Gallagher battles Tony Nese, Mustafa Ali looks to get even with Drew Gulak, and Rich Swann finally gets his singles match against Neville.

Opening Segment
Akira Tozawa is talking to Rich Swann when they are interrupted by Titus O’Neil. O’Neil says that Swann is talented enough to be a part of the Titus Brand but now is not the time. Swann leaves to prepare for his main event match against Neville and O’Neil turns his attention to Tozawa. O’Neil presents him with a contract to be a part of the Titus Brand, but Tozawa stays silent in confusion. O’Neil thinks it is a negotiation tactic, so he will sweeten the deal and bring it to Raw next week.

Gentleman Jack Gallagher vs. Tony Nese
Last week, Austin Aries addressed the WWE Universe to inform them that after his Cruiserweight Championship match against Neville at Extreme Rules, he is currently going through some medical testing. Since the test results are not complete, Aries cannot compete. Tony Nese interrupted Aries’ promo and threatened to attack him until Jack Gallagher showed up to save the day. With William III in hand, Gallagher took care of Nese and that confrontation led to this match.

Nese fakes an injury after being thrown into the ring post, and he takes advantage to slam Gallagher’s neck into the bottom rope. After hitting the Running Nese (knees), the Premier Athlete steals the victory. Winner: Tony Nese

Backstage Segment
Cedric Alexander is trying to move on from Noam Dar and Alicia Fox, but Dar approaches Alexander in the locker room. Dar says that he is going to have to get his bag from the bottom of the river, but Alexander’s bag is still in the locker room. Dar realizes that he got the wrong bag and Ariya Daivari storms into the locker room looking for a rare $15,000 bag that he coincidentally cannot find.

Drew Gulak vs. Mustafa Ali
While Drew Gulak is making his way to the ring, he asks Mustafa Ali to declare this match a “No Fly Zone.” For weeks, Gulak has been trying to get Ali to remove high-flying and risk-taking from his offense for a better and safer 205 Live. Gulak has scored a couple victories over Ali with his ground-based offense, and a win here will drive the point home.

Mustafa Ali goes to the second rope to attempt a dropkick, but Drew Gulak counters by catching both of his legs. Ali counters and beats Gulak at his own game, rolling the mat technician up to get the victory. Winner (via ground-based offense): Mustafa Ali

Backstage Segment
While recovering from his loss to Tony Nese, Jack Gallagher runs into Austin Aries backstage. Since Gallagher has had Aries’ back for months, Aries thinks that it is time to return the favor. The two international men of mustache (Aries’ words) strike up a “loose affiliation” to make sure that they have each other’s backs.

Rich Swann vs. Neville
Before the match gets underway, Akira Tozawa is given a VIP seat at ringside sectioned off with a purple velvet rope, courtesy of the Titus Brand. According to Titus O’Neil, Tozawa is the next Cruiserweight Champion, and Tozawa’s goal in 205 is assumedly to be the Cruiserweight Champion.

Swann and Neville trained together in Japan, but since joining WWE, they have gone their separate ways. They were supposed to have a match on Raw, but the King of the Cruiserweights attacked Swann while he was dancing in the ring. Swann is a former Cruiserweight Champion in his own right, and a win over Neville tonight could get him one step closer to becoming the first-ever two-time champion.

Rich Swann attempts a Phoenix Splash, but Neville rolls out of the way leading to Swann crashing and burning on the canvas. Neville immediately takes advantage by locking Swann in the Rings of Saturn, continuing his impressive record as Cruiserweight Champion. Winner (via submission): Neville
