5 Fantasy Football Myths

NFL Fantasy

There was once a time when fantasy football was only played by a few, but that time has since long-passed and now millions of people in North America play fantasy football every year. Some though remain hesitant. They cannot see the appeal of the game or think it is some type of all-consuming monster that will eat up all their free time and destroy their social life. That is not the case and in fact, the majority of fantasy football leagues are casual, fun and something to make games more entertaining. It is time to dispel the myths surrounding fantasy football.

Fantasy Football Is Complicated

At first glance, fantasy football may seem like an intricate game with multiple variables and too much strategy. In reality, it is relatively simple and fun. All you need to do is pick the players you want and set your line-up every week. Then, when the games start, follow along live on your computer or mobile device. The players that do the best tend to lead to teams wins. You can make moves and trades during the season to improve your team and really that’s it.

There Is A Best Strategy

Many people who play fantasy football believe they have discovered a winning formula or strategy that trumps all other approaches. Some say take running backs early, others have various strategies for PPR leagues. The reality is there is no one path to victory and usually, whoever wins, has a lot of luck.

If there was a winning formula, everyone would eventually use it and it would no longer be the best strategy. Outside of a few simple things like trying to pick a good running back within the first few rounds or not taking a kicker before the last round or two, there is no guaranteed strategy that will win you a fantasy championship. Just pick the best team you can and enjoy the ride.

Its Too Time-Consuming

We have all heard the stories of people spending hours every day researching players and tweaking their lineups. This is a viable approach to fantasy football, if you have the time or your work in an office where no one can see your computer. However, spending hours every day is not necessary. All you need is a few minutes of waiver moves at the start of the week and a few minutes to set and check your line-up.

Many sites like ESPN or Rotoworld do fantasy recaps of the day. So if you missed the injury news or the weather report, you are able to quickly catch up thanks to their daily focus pieces. Often times with waiver wires, there is a priority process, so it’s not as if one guy can run wild and do whatever he wants.

Only Crazy Football Fans Play Fantasy

Fantasy football was once a niche game played only by the biggest sports fans and nerds, but now the game has transcended that point and is played by millions of people. For the most part, public leagues are just a fun game to play against strangers with standardized rules and settings. Fantasy football is also a great game to play with friends and co-workers. Sure there are people who take the game to the extreme, but for the most part, fantasy football is a game played by casual fans who want more to watch on Sundays than just their favorite NFL team. It adds to the excitement of watching football and that’s all that matters.

You Need to Know Every Player

Sure fantasy football is easier when you know every player in the NFL, but it is not necessary. In fact, one of the best parts of fantasy football is it makes people fans of players they do not know and it grows their knowledge of the game. Over time, you will get to know more names, but to start just following rankings and advice will get you a good team and give you a chance to learn more players as the season progresses.
