This Week’s FCS Football Betting Odds and Picks: Oct. 27, 2018

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

The FCS football plays at GetMoreSports went 1-1 ATS per the college football betting odds for the second week in a row last week. Our decision to take Columbia and the points was a shrewd one as the Lions stayed within the number against the Big Green all the way, but the pick of East Tennessee State against Wofford was the wrong one. The number moved against us in a large way there, and that movement was somewhat peculiar.

Even with the middling week, the FCS football plays at GetMoreSports are a sterling 16-5-1 ATS on the year heading into Week 9.

Week 1 Record: 3-1 ATS

Week 2 Record: 3-0 ATS

Week 4 Record: 1-1-1 ATS

Week 5 Record: 3-0 ATS

Week 6 Record: 3-0 ATS

Kennesaw State -23 at Charleston Southern

We’ve been waiting all year for a chance to bet on the Owls, and this is the best chance we’ve had to date. The Owls have been one of the best teams in the FCS this year, and their option attack has been unstoppable. They are averaging 6.3 yards per carry this season, and they nearly knocked off FBS Georgia State in their opener. Kennesaw State has not been tested by any FCS team yet, and it’s hard for us to see what Charleston Southern will do to give them trouble.

Charleston Southern has yet to beat anyone of note. The Buccaneers’ best victory was over Hampton earlier in the year, and their best result was a nine-point loss to Elon where the Phoenix were content to just cruise in the fourth quarter after overcoming a slow start.

The Buccaneers have been average in terms of run defense, but they have yet to face anything like Kennesaw State’s attack.

On the other side of the ball, Charleston Southern has one of the worst offenses in FCS. The Buccaneers are 112th in total offense with 281.5 yards per game, and they are averaging just 5.8 yards per pass attempt. They will be hard-pressed to move the ball against a Kennesaw State team that is ranked fifth in the country in terms of total defense.

Jacksonville State -7.5 at Murray State

The Gamecocks were stunned on the road by Southeast Missouri State last week. Jacksonville State had won 36 straight Ohio Valley Conference games prior to last Saturday, but turnovers and special teams doomed them in a 37-14 loss. The Redhawks didn’t even crack 300 total yards in the victory, but you don’t need to when you force five turnovers, return a field goal for a touchdown, and score a safety.

Jacksonville State finds itself in an unusual spot now. The Gamecocks need to win out in order to win the OVC for the fifth straight season, and they take on the only remaining undefeated team in conference play this week when they travel to face Murray State.

The Racers have been outgunning foes in conference play, overcoming a slow start with at least 34 points in all four OVC games they have played. However, none of those four victories came against a team with a defense ranked in the top 40, and Jacksonville State has a rock solid defense that is allowing just 3.9 yards per play.

Bad weeks happen, and we believe a Jacksonville State team that ranks third in the FCS in total offense and total defense will shake it off with a dominant performance against Murray State.
