MLS Power Rankings For September 7

MLS

As we take a look at this week’s MLS power rankings, Toronto FC is the top dog. The odds makers have held steady as they are +300 to win it all. TFC is currently in the top spot in the MLS with 56 points, although NYCFC isn’t far off with 50 points to date. They are the only two teams in the league with at least 50 points. TFC has been so dominant, though, as they lead the league in goals scored and are second in goals allowed. With that in mind, let’s take a look at this weeks futures and see how the team’s stack up.

1. Toronto FC

Last Week: 1

MLS Cup Odds: +300

Toronto has still been idle since their 3-1 win in Montreal as a number of their players have been playing for their country. They’ll return to play on Saturday as they host San Jose, and they’ve certainly been doing the business at home as Toronto has 10 wins and three draws in their 13 home games this season, outscoring the competition 33-8.

2. New York City FC

Last Week: 2

MLS Cup Odds: +700

NYCFC trails Toronto by six points in the Eastern Conference after Jack Harrison scored in the 84th minute to give them a tough 1-0 win at home over Sporting Kansas City. Like Toronto and most of MLS (especially in the East, where four teams have 10 home wins), NYCFC is making their home advantage count with 10 wins, three draws and a loss in front of their fans this season, outscoring the competition 30-16. They’ll stay at home to host Portland on Saturday.

3. Seattle Sounders FC

Last Week: 3

MLS Cup Odds: +1000

The Sounders have been off since their 1-1 draw at home with Portland, so they still lead the Western Conference by a point over their biggest rivals, and Seattle has a game in hand as well. They’ll beat at home for their next game on Sunday against the LA Galaxy, and Seattle has eight wins, four draws and a loss at home this season, outscoring the opposition 21-11.

4. Portland Timbers

Last Week: 4

MLS Cup Odds: +1000

Portland has also been idle since their draw in Seattle, and that draw could be one of their most important points of the season as they have three wins, four draws and seven losses on the road. Portland has also been outscored 28-19 away from home this season, which doesn’t bode well as they head to the Big Apple to take on NYCFC.

5. Sporting Kansas City

Last Week: 5

MLS Cup Odds: +1000

Sporting Kansas City sits in third place in the Western Conference, just two points behind Seattle as they fell in New York to NYCFC, and they could be left to rue those dropped points as they were just six minutes and injury time away from getting at least one. They now had two wins, five draws and six losses on the road and while they’ve allowed just 12 goals away from home, Sporting Kansas City has scored just six. They’ll be on the road for their next game on Sunday in Columbus.

6. New York Red Bulls

Last Week: 6

MLS Cup Odds: +1200

The Red Bulls are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, 16 points out of first, and just four points ahead of Montreal, who is the first team outside of the playoff picture. Their last match ended in a 2-2 draw in Dallas as they got goals from Sacha Kljestan and Aaron Long on either side of halftime, but they couldn’t take advantage of having an extra man from the 37th minute onwards. The Red Bulls stay on the road, where they have four wins, a draw and eight losses, as they head to Chicago on Saturday.

7. Chicago Fire

Last Week: —

MLS Cup Odds: +1400

The Fire enter the rankings as they’re in third place in the Eastern Conference, although just eight points ahead of Montreal, after they won 1-0 in Montreal in their last match thanks to a 59th-minute goal from Bastian Schweinsteiger. They’re back home to host the Red Bulls, who are going to have a tough time as Chicago has 10 wins, a draw and three losses at home this season, doubling the competition by a score of 28-14 as they try to close the gap on Toronto and NYCFC.

8. Vancouver Whitecaps

Last Week: 8

MLS Cup Odds: +1400

The Whitecaps are fourth in the Western Conference, but just four points behind the leaders from Seattle, and they’ve been off since their 2-1 win on the road against Orlando City SC. That win was their fifth on the road, which actually ties them with the LA Galaxy and NYCFC for the second-most in the entire league; Toronto leads all with six away wins. They’ll return home to host Real Salt Lake on Saturday, and the Whitecaps have six wins, three draws and three losses at home this season.

9. Houston Dynamo

Last Week: 7

MLS Cup Odds: +1400

The Dynamo are in fifth place in the Western Conference and have been off since a 3-3 draw in Dallas. But their home game with Sporting Kansas City was cancelled last week due to Hurricane Harvey, so they’ve obviously had more important things to think about. The Dynamo donated $1 million to the relief fund for Hurricane Harvey, and a few other teams in MLS have followed their lead, notably the New England Revolution and Atlanta United. They are at home on Saturday against Colorado should be an emotional match, and as far as sports go, Houston have been great at home this season with nine wins, three draws and no losses.

10. FC Dallas

Last Week: 9

MLS Cup Odds: +1400

Dallas had to rally for their 2-2 home draw with the Red Bulls as Jacori Hayes was sent off after 37 minutes for his second yellow card, but Hernan Grana scored in the 54th minute, and then Mauro Diaz got the equalizer from the penalty spot in the 75th minute. However, Dallas has six home draws, the most among any of the playoff teams in the Western Conference and they’re a single point ahead of San Jose, who is behind them in seventh place. Dallas will head on the road, where they have three wins, four draws and five losses, as they visit Atlanta United.
