Ludvig Aberg surged to the top of the leaderboard Friday at TPC Sawgrass, carding a 9-under 63 to take a two-shot lead midway through the Players Championship.

The Swedish standout attacked the Stadium Course with precise iron play and confident putting, converting a series of birdie chances to separate himself from a crowded field. His 63 matched one of the lowest rounds typically seen at the Players, positioning him firmly in contention heading into the weekend. Aberg’s round featured sustained momentum rather than a single hot stretch, as he consistently found fairways, kept his approaches on the correct tiers of the greens, and capitalized on makeable putts.

Conditions at TPC Sawgrass demanded accuracy, especially with firming greens and the ever-present danger around the iconic finishing stretch. Aberg managed the course strategically, avoiding major trouble and limiting mistakes. His ability to control trajectory into tight pin positions allowed him to build his score without needing to recover from significant errors.

While Aberg moved clear at the top, Scottie Scheffler faced a very different battle. The world No. 1 spent much of his second round hovering around the projected cut line, needing key pars and timely putts to extend his week at the Players. Scheffler ultimately did just enough to advance to the weekend, narrowly making the cut and keeping alive his hopes of climbing back into contention over the final two rounds.

Scheffler’s position means he will likely need a low round on Saturday to apply pressure on Aberg and the rest of the leaders. His presence, however, ensures that one of the game’s most consistent performers remains part of the storyline at TPC Sawgrass.

As the tournament moves into the weekend, Aberg’s lead sets up a compelling test of his ability to maintain form under increased pressure. The Stadium Course is known for dramatic swings in momentum, particularly around the closing holes, where water and tight landing areas can quickly reshape the leaderboard. With two rounds remaining, Aberg holds the advantage, but challengers, including Scheffler, remain within range as the Players Championship heads toward its decisive stages.
