Allonzo Trier Staying at Arizona

With the announcement on Monday afternoon of star freshman Allonzo Trier staying at Arizona, Sean Miller’s Wildcats suddenly look like even more of a force to be reckoned with in the Pac-12 Conference and beyond next season.

Trier averaged 14.8 points per game as a freshman in Tucson despite missing a healthy chunk of conference play due to injury. When he was healthy though, there was no debating the fact that he made Arizona go from a good team with few offensive weapons, to one that had to be dealt with seriously on the offensive end.

While he had a chance to sneak into the first round of this year’s NBA Draft, returning to school gives Trier a real shot at improving his stock. His outside shot improved as his freshman season progressed, but I’m sure NBA scouts would like to see him have a full season of knock down ability before the commit to a 6-foot-4 shooting guard who was inconsistent shooting the ball and doesn’t make a tremendous amount of plays for others.

The question for Miller is how does how balance out minutes for all of the talented guards and wings that he will be coaching next season? Could he implement a platoon system like Kentucky did over a year ago? Sure, it’s a nice problem to have, but it’s a concern nonetheless. Whenever you get a bunch of talented prospects around each other and someone isn’t playing as often as they think they should, egos have a chance to be troublesome.

Still, Miller is experienced with these kinds of kids and shouldn’t have too much trouble morphing the Wildcats into a legitimate national title contender by year’s end.
