Anthony Richardson’s trajectory with the Indianapolis Colts has taken an unexpected turn, and the organization now faces a complex decision on how to proceed with the quarterback it selected fourth overall in the 2023 NFL draft.

Once viewed as the long-term centerpiece of the offense, Richardson now finds himself behind Riley Leonard on the depth chart. That shift alone reshapes the conversation around his role in Indianapolis. When a recent first-round pick is no longer the clear starter, questions naturally follow about development, fit in the system, and the team’s broader roster-building strategy.

For the Colts, the choice is no longer just about whether Richardson can eventually reclaim the starting job. It is also about how to maximize the value of a high draft investment while maintaining stability at the game’s most important position. The front office and coaching staff must weigh several factors: Richardson’s physical tools and upside, his progress as a passer and decision-maker, the locker room’s confidence in him, and the momentum Leonard has built by earning the top spot.

Team dynamics add another layer of complication. Quarterback depth charts affect practice reps, playbook tailoring, and leadership structure. If Leonard continues to solidify his position, Richardson’s opportunities to develop in live game situations could become limited, making it harder for the organization to fully evaluate him. At the same time, carrying a former top-five pick as a backup brings its own pressures and expectations from both inside and outside the building.

Financial and long-term planning issues also come into play. High draft picks are typically expected to anchor a franchise for years, and any shift away from that plan forces a reexamination of timelines and roster construction. The Colts must decide whether to recommit to Richardson in a clearly defined role, explore trade interest, or consider other options, all while managing the message to fans and players.

No matter the direction, Richardson’s situation illustrates how quickly a quarterback plan can change in the NFL. A year or two ago, his path in Indianapolis appeared straightforward. Now, his future with the Colts is far less certain, and the organization’s next move will say a great deal about how it views both its present and its long-term outlook at quarterback.
