How Arrieta Signing Impacts Philadelphia Phillies Betting Odds

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies sent the rest of Major League Baseball a message when they signed free agent pitcher Jake Arrieta to a three-year, $75 million deal. The Phillies, who are viewed as a team that’s rebuilding by many, have made it clear that they expect to contend for the World Series in the near future. The move didn’t go unnoticed by oddsmakers as BetDSI Sportsbook has updated the Phillies odds to win it all. They moved to +8000 following the addition of Arrieta, down from +12000 before the move was announced on Sunday. Meanwhile, their regular season win total climbed from 76 to 78.5, indicating the Arrieta is worth 2.5 wins to the team.

The main question people are wondering is which Arrieta are the Phillies getting? He won the National League Cy Young award with the Chicago Cubs in 2015. However, his numbers haven’t been the same since. He posted a 2.08 ERA over 385.2 innings with a .519 OPP OPS between 2014 and 2015  but has recorded a 3.30 ERA and a .646 OPP OPS in just 365.2 innings over the last two seasons since. His WAR has declined from 8.7 to 3.4 to 1.9 over the last three seasons.

Arrieta wasn’t the only big addition to the Phillies roster this offseason as they also gave Carlos Santana $60 million for three seasons. Those signings combined with a full season from Rhys Hoskins, J.P. Crawford and an intriguing young pitching staff could be enough to make at least one of Philadelphia’s futures bets worth taking a look at. As optimistic as the front office might be, this club still has a lot of work to do to turn around its fortunes after they posted a 66-96 record a year ago.

At +8000 odds to win the World Series outright, the Phillies likely aren’t worth taking a chance on with this type of bet right now. After all, even after the changes this team made it’s important to remember they after coming off a season in which they registered only 66 wins. After years of rebuilding, a playoff berth would mark success for this team. However, their regular season win total might be something to look at. They should be good enough to push for a .500 record – if everything goes right.
