Astros News: George Springer Used Racial Slur Towards Umpire In 2019

MLB

Indeed, George Springer has always appeared to be a gentleman of a ballplayer. However, players in the league today are under a microscope in that everything you do goes on tape. It could be said this could go for all sports.

Suddenly brought to the attention is an incident that occurred in May of this season at Minute Maid Ballpark.

Outsports has the report, and included the tweet in which Springer was caught on camera using an anti-gay slur towards umpire Angel Hernandez. Therefore, footage of this tweet was caught by an Astros fan and is on display below.

While unbeknownst to much of the baseball world, Outsports reports that baseball released the following quote in response to Springer’s actions.

“This inappropriate behavior was addressed with Mr. Springer and the Houston Astros,” according to the office of commissioner Rob Manfred, “and he has been disciplined.”

Obviously, I am shocked to learn this. Already reading my fair share of baseball items, I never knew about it. The take home message here is that again, you simply cannot do these things if you’re in the public eye like a professional baseball player is on a nightly basis.

By comparison – and in a similar incident – MLB umpire Rob Drake recently had bizarre comments in a tweet that included buying an AR-15 assault rifle.

In closing, this is a tough look for the sport I love so much. And to quote so many on the internet nowadays, you hate to see it.

Hopefully Springer has learned his lesson, and has made amends to not make the same unfortunate mistake twice.
