Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin did not participate in the team’s 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Monday due to his involvement in a car accident earlier in the day. According to the team, the incident occurred en route to the arena and Nichushkin was held out of the night’s game as a precautionary measure.

No details have been released regarding the severity of the accident or whether Nichushkin sustained any injuries, but team officials emphasized that holding him out was a precaution. It is unclear whether he will require further medical evaluation or miss additional games.

Nichushkin has played a key role for the Avalanche this season, contributing significantly on both ends of the ice. His absence was notable, but Colorado managed to secure a strong victory without him. Several players stepped up in his place, providing depth scoring and responsible play on defense to neutralize Washington’s attack.

Head coach Jared Bednar did not provide a timeline for Nichushkin’s return but confirmed that the decision to keep him out was made shortly before the game began, following the car accident. “We’re relieved that Val is okay,” Bednar said. “We just thought it was best for him to sit this one out. His health and safety come first.”

The Avalanche have dealt with various injuries and lineup adjustments throughout the season, and Nichushkin’s status will be closely monitored as the team continues to push for consistency in the second half of the season. Colorado currently sits near the top of the Western Conference standings and will look to maintain momentum as they navigate this latest development.

More details may become available as team officials and medical staff assess Nichushkin’s condition in the coming days. For now, the Avalanche and their fans hope for his swift and full recovery.
