Outfielder Avisaíl García has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball after a 13-year career that included time with multiple teams, most recently the Miami Marlins. The 32-year-old Venezuelan native concluded his professional journey having played most recently in Miami, where he spent the final three seasons of his career.
García made his MLB debut in 2012 with the Detroit Tigers and quickly showed promise as a power-hitting corner outfielder. Over the course of his career, he also played for the Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Milwaukee Brewers before signing with the Marlins. Known for his strong arm, solid defensive play in right field, and offensive capabilities, García accumulated more than 800 hits, including over 100 home runs, and drove in several hundred runs across more than 1,000 games.
His most productive season came in 2017 with the White Sox, when he batted .330 and earned his first and only All-Star selection. That year, he also reached career highs in hits and runs batted in. García showed similar offensive potential during his time with Milwaukee in 2021, when he hit 29 home runs.
In December 2021, García signed a four-year contract with the Miami Marlins, but he was hampered by injuries throughout his time in South Florida. Limited playing time and challenges at the plate contributed to a decline in his offensive numbers, and he appeared in fewer games in each successive season.
Across his MLB tenure, García was respected as a versatile player with a strong work ethic and clubhouse presence. His ability to perform both at the plate and in the outfield made him a valuable asset to the teams he played for. While he didn’t reach some of the lofty expectations placed on him early in his career, he carved out a respectable career and left a positive impression among teammates and fans alike.
With his retirement, García closes the chapter on a solid major league career and steps away from the game after contributing more than a decade of service to the sport.
