Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair has been fined $11,593 by the NFL for displaying a personal message on his eye black during the team’s recent wild-card playoff game, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The message, which read “stop the genocide,” appeared on Al-Shaair’s face during the game and was deemed a violation of the league’s uniform policy.

The NFL has rules in place governing uniformity and allowable messages on player equipment, including guidelines around eye black, accessories, and decals. While the league has made allowances for approved causes—such as social justice messages through its “My Cause My Cleats” initiative—unauthorized messages on gear during games are subject to disciplinary action.

Al-Shaair, who joined the Texans prior to the 2023 season after four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, started at linebacker during the wild-card matchup. He has been a consistent contributor to the Texans’ defense throughout the regular season, providing veteran leadership and on-field production.

This fine highlights the NFL’s continued enforcement of its uniform and conduct policies during the playoffs. The league has historically issued fines for non-compliant attire or personal messages that do not align with approved team or league standards. There has been no official statement from either Al-Shaair or the Texans organization regarding the fine.

While the league occasionally grants players an opportunity to express personal or advocacy-related views, such expressions must typically be pre-approved and fall within specific time frames or events. Playoff games are subject to heightened scrutiny given their visibility and significance.

As the postseason continues, the NFL’s stance on uniform policy remains a focus, especially when personal statements intersect with league guidelines. Any further developments could shape future discussions about player expression within the rules governing game-day appearance.
