Baker Mayfield Sounds Off and NaVorro Bowman Steps Away From the Game

Baker Mayfield has always been one to speak his mind, and he didn’t hold back when he was asked about teammate Duke Johnson’s trade request on Tuesday. Johnson has claimed that general manager John Dorsey had been shopping the fifth-year running back out of Miami for a month prior to the Browns signing Kareem Hunt in mid-February, and he publicly requested a trade shortly after Hunt was signed. Johnson missed all of Cleveland’s voluntary workouts last month, but he has been with the team for mandatory mini-camp this week.

Linebacker NaVorro Bowman announced his retirement from the NFL yesterday, and he made sure to let his former San Francisco 49ers teammates know first. Bowman played with the 49ers from 2010 to 2017. He was one of the best linebackers in the NFL from 2011 to 2013, being named an All-Pro in all three of those seasons, but he suffered two major injuries and was never the same player after that. Bowman missed the entire 2014 season after tearing his ACL and MCL in the 2013 NFC Championship Game, and he missed 12 games in 2016 with a torn Achilles’ tendon. He didn’t play a down of football last year, but he doesn’t seem to have any regrets about walking away from the game.

For the first time in six years, there will be an NFL game in Canada. There hasn’t been an NFL game north of the border since Buffalo stopped playing two home games per year in Toronto, but the Oakland Raiders and Green Pay Packers will meet in Manitoba in the third week of the NFL preseason. This game is nominally a home game for Oakland, but there are sure to be many Packers fans in attendance with the game in Winnipeg.

Von Miller is saying the right things about Denver’s new quarterback. The Broncos traded for Joe Flacco this offseason, and the team is hoping that he can kickstart an offense that has been moribund since Peyton Manning retired. Flacco did win a Super Bowl MVP, but he has largely been an average quarterback for the past five years.
