Baseball Betting: The Miami Marlins could be worth a play on Thursday night as they visit the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Marlins are expected to send Jarred Cosart who they just got from the Houston Astros at the trading deadline while the Pirates should be going with Edinson Volquez. Probable Pitching Matchup – Cosart vs. Volquez
The edge in terms of pitching in this game could be with the road team as Cosart has some ability while Volquez is just a rag arm. Cosart is still settling in with his new team. He pitched okay for a while last time out against the Reds before running into trouble in the sixth. That start skewed his numbers a bit as he is now 0-2 in his last three starts with a 6.75 ERA.
Volquez is 8-7 on the season with a 3.91 ERA. He gave up four runs last time out against the Arizona Diamondbacks in a no-decision. In his last three starts he has given up nine walks. Volquez is simply a pitcher who will go about six innings and give up three or four runs. He is not going to shut teams down very often so the opposing team normally always has a chance to win.
Game Notes
The Pittsburgh Pirates have taken 7 of the last 10 in this series with three of the last four going over the total. The teams met back in mid-June with the Pirates winning two of three in Miami. The Pirates won all three games at home last year against the Marlins but they are still just 4-6 in the last ten at home against the fish. Neither of these teams has been very good in terms of pitching as they both come into this game below average in terms of earned run average. The Marlins are 17th in ERA while the Pirates are 15th.
