BAYERN MUNICH

Even though the defending champions are performing almost excellent when it comes to results, there are many unhappy fans and obviously, a couple of board members recently who are not completely satisfied with the manner team started the season. The new sports director Hasan Salihamidzic has already been criticized in local newspapers for his apparent lack of resolve and there have been some rumors that the head coach Carlo Ancelotti might even leave the team during the upcoming winter break.

To put the unchecked stories aside, the team has five wins and one loss in all competitions this season. In the league, Bayern Munich is currently ranked second, one point behind the leader Borussia Dortmund and 4-0-1 record. The only loss came in week 3 on the road against TSG Hoffenheim 1899 (2:0) and that was the starting point of this mild discontentment by the fans. In the UEFA Champions League, they are perfect for now with 3:0 win over the Belgian Champion Anderlecht last week. The next matchup in the strongest European team competition will take place next Wednesday and that will probably be the biggest test for the squad so far as they travel to Paris in order to lock horns with Paris Saint-Germain, the team that broke all records in transfer market this summer by spending over 400 Million Euros on signing only two guys (Brazilian star Neymar from Barcelona and Kylian Mbappe from AS Monaco).

Busy schedule is not taking its toll on the team as Bayern has two comfortable wins in last four days (4:0 against FSV Mainz 05 at home, 3:0 against Schalke 04 on the road). Against the Miners, Ancelotti started with a 4-2-3-1 scheme with Kimmich, Martinez, Sule and Rafinha in front of goalie Sven Ulreich who is replacing injured Manuel Neuer. Tolisso and Rudy operated in front of aforementioned four as defensive midfielders while James Rodriguez, Thomas Muller, and Kingsley Coman provided the backup for Robert Lewandowski in the attack. Rodriguez scored his first goal in Bayern’s shirt in while Lewandowski and Vidal scored one each too. Statistically, they completely dominated the Schakle 04 team with 63% of ball possession and 20 shots towards opponent’s goal. Individually, besides goal scorers, Thomas Muller represented the biggest threat goalkeeper Fahrmann with three shots while Niklas Sule and Corentin Tolisso completely dominated the passing segment with 96.5% and 95.2% of passes completed.

Manuel Neuer broke his foot in training on Monday and he will be absent from the team until January 2018. David Alaba (knee) is expected to be back later this month while Juan Bernat (ankle) should be out until early November. Thiago Alcantara (unknown) status is unknown and it’s uncertain if he will play on Friday.

VFL WOLFSBURG

The Wolves managed to stay winless at home once again as they split the points with Werder on Tuesday in a 1:1 draw. They are currently ranked ad No. 13 spot in the league table with a 1-2-2 record and five total points earned. The only win came in the week 2 against Eintracht Frankfurt on the road (1:0). Their total goal difference is 3-6 but on the road, they have only one goal conceded (1:0 loss against Stuttgart last weekend). 80% of Wolfsburg’s matchups had fewer than 2.5 goals so far while 40% of those matches had fewer than 1.5 goals in total. Both teams scored in two of their five total duels in 2017 season.

Against Werder, coach Schmidt started the game with a 4-2-3-1 scheme that worked out good during the first half having in mind that team had a 1:0 advantage at the break (Divock Origi in the 28th minute). Gerhardt, Udokhai, Knoche, and Verhaegh operated as a defensive line in fron of goalie Casteels while Arnold and Camacho started in front of them as defensive midfielders. Ntep de Madiba, Malli and Didavi operated in the midfield while Origi represented the only player at centre-forward position. Statistically, the Wolves had the imitative throughout the entire game with 59% of ball possession and 17 shots towards the goal oppose to 15 by Werder. Individually, Yusuf Malli presented the biggest threat for Bremen’s goalie Pavlenka with five total shots while passing segment belonged to Felix Udhokai with 91.8% and Daniel Didavi with 90.2% of passes completed.

Mario Gomez’s ankle injury from few weeks has proved to be much more serious than previously thought and he is still listed with “a few weeks” timetable for return. John Anthony Brooks (thigh) is expected to be available in mid-November while Jeffrey Bruma’s (knee) status is unknown. Jakub Blaszczykowski (flu) and Kaylen Hinds (cold) are listed as doubtful for Friday while Adelin Vierinha (ankle) should be ready in few days. Christian Trasch (unknown) is day to day.

Bayern Munich vs. VFL Wolfsburg – Match Prediction

The last four matchups in the league between these two foes went in total domination of Bayern Munich as they managed to record all four wins with an unbelievable 18-1 goal difference (more than four goals scored per matchup). Both last season matchups were blow-outs of the Wolves by Bayern team (5:0 win at home, 6:0 win on the road) and hopefully, we’ll not see this kind of one-sided performance on Friday.

Most recent Wolfsburg’s win occurred on January 30th in 2015 (4:1 win at Volkswagen Arena) and the last time they eluded the loss in Munich was in 2001 season, 16 years ago (3:3 draw).

I sincerely doubt that the Wolfsburg team can avoid another defeat on Friday but they should at least put up a fight. My first guess here will be over 3.5 goals in total, while the additional pick will be Bayern’s win.

My pick: Over 3.5 goals in total (+100)
