The 2026 Chicago Bears opened training camp in Lake Forest, Illinois, with team reporters on site tracking standouts, position battles, depth-chart movement and the quarterback room, according to Bears reporter Courtney Cronin. The camp file will be updated frequently through the start of the preseason, which begins the week of Aug. 13.
Quarterback Caleb Williams arrived at camp after shedding 10 to 15 pounds, a change he credited to improved eating habits, cutting late-night meals and emphasizing sleep. “I’m excited about that to be able to move a little bit better, be smoother,” Williams said. Coaching additions in Ben Johnson’s offense include more coverage recognition work; Williams is handling more checks, “kills” and pre-snap responsibilities as Johnson increases his workload, and the pair remain focused on a 70% completion-rate goal.
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen opened practice with the traditional 40 up-downs for defensive players. Allen singled out new safety Coby Bryant as the type of player he wants in his scheme, praising Bryant’s speed, violence, instincts and play demeanor. “I love his play style,” Allen said. “He plays fast. He plays violent. He’s smart. He’s instinctive.” Allen said Bryant’s approach on tape suggested a contagious mindset Allen hopes will translate to the Bears’ defense.
With cornerback Kyler Gordon on the physically unable to perform list, the Bears are testing contingency plans at the nickel corner spot. Reserve defensive backs expected to receive slot reps include Cam Lewis, Jaylon Jones, Josh Blackwell and rookie Malik Muhammad, according to Cronin.
General manager Ryan Poles reiterated his interest in keeping right tackle Darnell Wright long term and indicated there is a window to reach an extension. Poles noted the organization’s preference for settling contract matters before camp, as it did previously with tight end Cole Kmet and wide receiver DJ Moore, and said he did not want any distractions when players reported to Halas Hall.
