Bellator 149 Friday Night on Spike TV

Bellator 149 Friday

Bellator 149 Friday Night on Spike TVBellator returns this Friday, February 19th, to the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas with Bellator 149. The main event features a “Retro” re-match as Ken Shamrock takes on Royce Gracie for the third time.

Royce Gracie is the younger of the two men at 49 years old, and that just about says it all as far as this match is concerned.  Shamrock is three years his senior. A review of the UFC’s history brings us to the curious case of Mark Burch.  Burch was an older fighter a few years back when he got the call from the UFC, but his match was cancelled because he was in his late 30s and he had not completed an additional set of medical exams required of older athletes. UFC dream crushed.

Did Gracie and Shamrock complete all those requirements? Were those reuiqrements waved or not enforced in Texas? Will the state of Texas consider both men cleared to fight and issue licenses?

Bellator has put the fight out there, but the company can’t use highlights of the first two meeting between the two.  At least the first fight was very compelling, but that was 23 years ago.

More than likely these are moot points as it appears that this fight is going to happen.  The books have it a straight pick ’em at this point, and from a betting perspective, why not? Literally anything can happen in this fight.  Gracie has not fought in eight-and-a-half years, and it bears noting that some sights have the fight listed in the Heavyweight category.  Shamrock weighed about 205 lbs for the last outing of his against Kimbo Slice, and he may bulk up a bit for this fight.  No way Gracie weighs more than 190-195 lbs for this one.

The co-feature is another one of Bellator’s gimmick fights as Kimbo Slice returns to face Dada 5000.  Dada, whose real name is Dhafir Harris, is 2-0 and like Slice, comes with a reputation from the streets.  This fight features the youngsters on Bellator’s roster  as Harris is 38 and Slice is 42. We could be seeing both men in the Bellator cage for the next ten years.

The rest of the main card features solid, competitve action as former Light Heavyweight titleholder Emanuel Newton returns to face the tough Linton Vassell and Melvin Guillard locks up with Derek Campos.
