Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios will undergo surgery on his pitching elbow Wednesday, the team announced Saturday, per the report.
The procedure is intended to address a stress fracture and potential “loose bodies,” though there is concern that a more significant repair could be required, the report says. Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters there may be “some ligament stuff going on.”
Schneider said the club will know more once surgeons are inside the elbow. “They’re going to figure that out when they’re in there,” he told reporters, per the report. Schneider added that Berrios was likely to be out at least a couple months but that the timeline could be longer if the damage is more severe, the report says.
Berrios, 31, had not pitched this season after the stress fracture was initially diagnosed during an MRI prior to the World Baseball Classic, the report says. Elbow inflammation surfaced after he made four rehab starts, and that development prompted the decision to proceed with surgery, per the report.
Last season, Berrios went 9-5 with a 4.17 ERA in 31 appearances and finished the year on the injured list, the report says. He did not pitch in the postseason as the Blue Jays advanced on their World Series run, per the report. The team will await surgical findings to determine the extent of repair needed and the coming recovery timeline, the report adds. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
