Boise State Broncos vs. Colorado State Rams Preview

Boise State Broncos

The Boise State Broncos checked another box off their list of goals for this season when they became bowl eligible with a 41-14 win over the Utah State Aggies last weekend. Now they will attempt to remain undefeated against in conference play versus one of their toughest competitors from the Mountain West.

The Broncos are on a roll right now as they have won five straight games. They had a couple of tough setbacks earlier this season, getting blown out at home to Virginia and lost in Triple overtime at Washington State, but this team is dialed in right now. During their five-game winning streak, their defense hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in any contest.

The Broncos will travel this weekend as they take on the Colorado State Buffaloes in another key conference showdown. Colorado State is coming off its second consecutive loss. They will try to rebound but their offense has gone a little cold. They scored just 13 points at Wyoming last week and 28 at home in a blowout loss to Air Force the week before. While they have scored 38 or more four times this season, they have averaged just 16.8 points per game in their four losses. They have to find a way to breakthrough Boise State’s defense because if this is a defensive showdown, they’re heading for a loss.

Reasons To Bet On The Boise State Broncos

The Broncos are coming off another big win after taking down Nevada in a 41-14 route at home. Boise State is capable of scoring points in bunches and that trend continues with another lopsided victory last week. Quarterback Brett Rypien continued to shine as he threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Meanwhile, sophomore running back Alexander Mattison delivered another impressive performance by rushing for 64 yards and two scores. Boise State’s offense is capable of beating opponents in more ways than one and that versatility is a big reason for their success so far this season. The Broncos have averaged 31.1 points per game so far this season, including 41 points scored in back-to-backs wins over Utah State and Nevada.

Reasons To Bet On The Colorado State Rams

The Rams haven’t been able to get the stops they need in back-to-back losses to Air Force and Wyoming. Even though they delivered a much better effort last week, the offense didn’t do nearly enough to get the job done against the Cowboys. Senior quarterback Nick Stevens completed just 8-of-14 pass attempts for 110 yards and ran for 17 yards in the loss. The Rams are going to need more consistent production out of their quarterback in order to have any shot at keeping it close against Boise State. Meanwhile, senior running back Dalyn Dawkins continues his strong campaign with 154 rushing yards in last week’s loss. Dawkins is clearly the most talented weapon in the Colorado State offense but he can’t carry the offense on his own. The Rams defense is talented enough to at least slow down the Broncos offense this week. It won’t matter unless their offense is cable to start putting up points.

Outlook

We saw the Broncos open up as a 4.5-point road favorite in this spot but the line has bounced around since then. We’ve seen it mostly go in one direction, though, as the action has been on Boise State. They are now up to -6. As far as the total goes, it’s been the same story. It opened up at 56 but the line now sits at 57.5 as the action has been on the over.

Boise State is rolling right now and there is no reason to think that they will slow down this week. The Broncos are capable of scoring points in bunches so even if the Colorado State defense slows them down a little bit it might not matter. The bigger problem for the Rams is their lack of scoring efficiency. Boise State will likely put up a ton of points on the road in this one and should have no problem winning and covering on the road.
