BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH

The Borussia Monchengladbach is stuck in the middle of the league table this season. The team that played in the Champions League last season and Europa League this season is in jeopardy of not seeing any European competitions football next year.

They rank ninth with 39 points in 29 matches and are only two points behind the spot that leads to Europe play but this part of the table is very crowded and it looks like seven teams will be in the battle for those two left spots as first four teams on the table already distanced themselves on the top. Besides Monchengladbach, Hertha, Freiburg, Koln, Werder and Frankfurt are all ranked in five points span with chances of ending fifth or sixth in the league.

When it comes to the recent form, Monchengladbach is 4-1-3 in the last eight games and they are 2-0-2 in the last four home matches. They are 7-3-4 overall at home this season with 21-12 goal difference (37-41 overall) and they rank ninth in the home league table with 24 of 42 possible points earned. 50% of Borussia’s home games are over 2.5 goals but only 14% of their home matches are over 3.5 goals in total.

They score 1.50 and concede 0.86 goals per match at home (1.28-1.41 overall) and only 10% of their games are over 2.5 goals at half-time. In half of their home matches this season both teams scored and most common result at home is a 1:2 loss (occurred three times). Most common results in front of their own crowd at the half-time are 1-0 lead and 0-0 (occurred five times each).

Striker Lars Stindl tops the team in scoring this season with nine goals while Raffael has six in his account. Leading assister is Mahmoud Dahoud with six while Thorgan Hazard and Cristoph Kramer collected four assists each. Defenders Andreas Christensen and Jannik Vestergaard top the passing segment with 1344 and 1293 total passes. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer played in every game of the season so far and collected 79 saves and has 10 games with clean sheets.

Christoph Kramer (Knee) is expected to be back in late April while Fabian Johnson (Thigh) should be available in few days. Raffael (Knee), Tony Jantschke (Wrist), Moritz Nicolas (Broken arm), Mamadou Doucoure (Thigh) and Joel Mero (Broken leg) are all day to day while Thorgan Hazard (Knee) and Marvin Schulz (Groin) are back in training and they are both available to coach Hecking.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

The Borussia Dortmund exited their Champions League campaign after the second loss by Monaco on Wednesday night (1:3). The team from Dortmund reached the quarterfinals but they couldn’t advance further. In the first game played at the Signal Iduna Park, Monaco also won with a 3:2 score and it became obvious that they are in a better form currently and that the Dortmund’s long injury list would define this match-up.

Now, they can turn their focus to the German Bundesliga where they rank fourth, one point behind the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Only one of these two teams will earn the right to play in the Champions League next year while the other will play in the Europa League. In their last eight games in the league, Borussia has a 5-1-2 record and they are 1-1-2 in their last four road games (going three consecutive games without a road win).

The team is 4-5-6 on the road this season with a 27-25 goal difference (62-33 overall) and they rank fourth in the road league table with 17 of 45 possible points earned. Dortmund has scored in each of their last 20 matches and they have also conceded at least one goal in 93% of their total away games. They have scored in 87% of their away matches including at least one goal scored in each of their last 12 away matches.

They score 1.80 and concede 1.67 goals per game on the road this season (2.14-1.14 overall) and 67% of their road games are over 2.5 goals while 33% of their away matches are over 3.5 goals in total. 27% of their away games are over 4.5 goals while 20% of their games are over 2.5 goals at the half-time. Nevertheless, most common results on the road are 2:1 loss and 1:1 draw (both occurred three times).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tops the team and the league this season in scoring with 26 goals in 27 games while Ousmane Dembele has six goals on his account so far. Dembele is the team’s leading assister with 10 while Christian Pulisic collected six. Passing segment belongs to Julian Weigl and Matthias Ginter with 1575 and 1540 total passes. Roman Burki (22 appearances) and Roman Weidenfeller (7 appearances) collected 73 saves and they also have eight clean sheet games combined.

Mario Goetze (Thigh, Illness) and Jacob Larsen (Broken foot) are both out for the season while Marc Bartra (Broken Wrist) should be back sometime during the month of May. Sebastian Rode (Muscle) is doubtful for Saturday’s game while Andre Schurrle’s (Achilles tendon) status is still unknown. Julian Weigl (Thigh) is day to day and he could sit on the sidelines.

First match-up of the season between these two teams went Dortmund’s way, who came out on top defeating the Foals with 4:1. Having in mind their recent Champions League exit and Dortmund’s long list of injuries followed by some unfortunate happenings off the field, I think that Monchengladbach actually has a chance to get some kind of positive result on Saturday. Monchengladbach has only one win and one draw in the last 15 match-ups against Dortmund in the league and maybe it’s time to end that infamous streak. Therefore, I am will take the double chance on Borussia Monchengladbach 1x which is offered at -120. Additionally, the two teams have combined for 17 goals over their last 4 meetings, but considering the importance of the game I doubt it that they will score more than 3 goals, which is why I am taking the Under 3.5 goals offered at -152.

MY PICK: Borussia Monchengladbach 1X (-120)

Total: Under 3.5 goals (-152)
