Boston Goes Up 1-0 on Carolina, Worlds Kicks Off and More

For the first time since the start of the postseason last month, there are no playoff games tonight. The Western Conference finalists are getting a rest before their series starts on Saturday, while the Eastern Conference finalists played last night with Boston beating Carolina 5-2. There is hockey being played across the pond though, so let’s split our attention between the NHL and Worlds below.

The Boston Bruins turned it on in the third period to knock off the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals last night. The Bruins scored two goals on the power play in the span of 30 seconds, and that was the difference.

The decision to have little used veteran Steven Kampfer fill in for Charlie McAvoy last night was an inspired one. Kampfer scored his first playoff goal in just his second playoff game, and that could earn him a spot in the lineup in future games.

Kaapo Kakko is projected to be the No. 2 pick in the NHL Draft next month, and he scored a fantastic goal to open the scoring for his native Finland against Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championships. Finland went on to win this match 3-1.

It’s still two years until Seattle’s NHL team plays its first game, but the ownership group has been making some news. They are letting fans vote on the team’s logo, colors, and nickname, and it’s looking very likely that Seattle will have a unique nickname. I’m partial to the Seattle Kraken.

San Jose and St. Louis get their series started tomorrow in a rematch of the 2016 Western Conference Final. The Sharks beat the Blues 4-2 to advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs three years ago, and St. Louis is out to return the favor.
