Botafogo, one of Brazil’s most historic football clubs, has received a three-window transfer ban from FIFA as a result of non-payment related to the acquisition of forward Thiago Almada. The ban, which officially begins on December 31, affects the club’s activities in upcoming transfer windows and restricts them from registering new players during this period.
The disciplinary measure stems from Botafogo’s failure to fulfill a $21 million payment owed to Major League Soccer side Atlanta United FC for Almada. The transfer had originally taken place during the summer of 2024. According to reports, Botafogo did not meet the agreed-upon financial terms by the stipulated deadline, prompting Atlanta United to file a formal complaint with FIFA.
FIFA’s regulations on the status and transfer of players allow for sanctions, including transfer bans, when clubs fail to meet contractual obligations in player transactions. In this case, the organization ruled in favor of Atlanta United and ordered the ban to be implemented starting at the end of the 2024 calendar year.
The transfer ban means Botafogo will be unable to register any new players during the next three registration periods, both domestic and international. Existing players and academy promotions will not be affected, but the restriction could significantly impact the club’s squad planning and competitiveness over the affected windows.
Thiago Almada, an Argentine international known for his creativity and goal-scoring ability, had drawn considerable attention prior to his move. His transition from Major League Soccer to the Brazilian top flight was seen as a major acquisition for Botafogo. However, the financial terms of the deal have now placed the club in a difficult situation both on and off the pitch.
Club officials have not issued a public statement on the matter at this time. It remains to be seen whether any appeals or settlements will be sought in order to mitigate the impact of the ban before the next transfer window opens.
