Boxing 2017 Talk With Frank Lotierzo – TnS #36

Boxing 2017 Talk With Frank Lotierzo – TnS #36 – This latest TalknShoot Boxing Podcast sees host Miguel Iturrate joined by veteran boxing analyst Frank Lotierzo, who brings more than 30 years of experience to the table. The talk centers around the fight calendar for January 28th as both Showtime and HBO broadcast eye catching boxing events.

Showtime Boxing aired the much talked about rematch between Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz as the main event of a card that also saw Mikey Garcia win the WBC’s lightweight world title from Dejan Zlaticanin.

Frampton and Santa Cruz met for the first time in July of 2016 and Frampton won a majority decision to remain undefeated and win the WBA featherweight title. This past January 28th Santa Cruz evened the score, winning a majority decision over Frampton to even the series and set up a potentially very lucrative third bout between the two men.

As for Mikey Garcia, the 28-year-old came back late last year after an absence of more than 2 years from the sport and this WBC belt gives him a world title in a third weight class this far in his 36-0 pro career. Garcia displayed enough excellent technique in his return that it is time to start talking about his placement on today’s pound for pound lists. Before his self imposed hiatus Garcia was already creeping into the top 10 pound for pound lists of that time and the long layoff has not seem to have affected his skills at all. To the contrary, he seems sharper and his body has adapted to the 135 pound weigh class very well. At one point, Lotierzo called Garcia “the most impressive fighter of the weekend.”

On HBO, Golden Boy put on a WBC world super featherweight title match between champion Francisco Vargas and challenger Miguel Berchelt. The co-feature bout saw Japan’s Takashi Miura facing Miguel Roman, also at super featherweight and both bouts delivered compelling combat throughout. In the end Berchelt ripped the belt from Vargas’ hands and Miura outclassed Roman to set up a Berchelt vs Miura showdown later in the year.

The discussion also touches briefly on WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, whose February 25th math-up with Andrzej Wawrzyk was cancelled after Warwrzyk tested positive for steroids.

Boxing 2017 Talk With Frank Lotierzo – TnS #36

The 36th edition of the TnS Boxing Podcast also features Frank Lotierzo as he gives his take on the much talked about Floyd Mayweather Jr versus Conor McGregor bout. With both men engaged in a constant war of words on social media the idea of the fight does not seem to be going away.

The fight is likely to be the biggest “prizefight” of all time in terms of box office, but is that fact alone enough to justify what will certainly be a circus? The podcast heads into the comparison of “Spectacle” versus “sport.” The fact is that McGregor has not professional boxing matches, so what could a commission do? Would the match be four rounds, as any novice boxer would be forced to do or would McGregor walk into a twelve round bout with the best fighter of this past generation for his debut?
