Brendan Sorsby’s decision to apply for the NFL supplemental draft has introduced a potential short-term path to a quarterback solution for the New York Jets, according to the report. Sorsby, who left Texas Tech after admitting to placing bets and completing in-patient rehab for a gambling addiction, would be eligible for a supplemental draft if the league approves his application; that event would be held in about a month.
If a team is awarded a supplemental-draft player, it would forfeit its pick in the equivalent round of next year’s draft and the order would be determined by a weighted lottery, the report said. Media speculation has suggested it would take roughly a second-round pick to land Sorsby, a prospect some evaluators consider first-round talent.
The Jets could view a supplemental pick as a way to accelerate their rebuild without surrendering any of their three first-round picks in the 2027 draft. But there are notable obstacles: Sorsby could face an immediate suspension under the league’s personal-conduct policy, and teams would need to weigh possible public-relations fallout tied to his gambling history.
New York already has familiarity with Sorsby from fall scouting and his 2025 season at Cincinnati, when he threw for 2,800 yards, 28 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding nine rushing touchdowns, according to the report. The team could continue vetting him with a visit to its facility or by attending his pro day on July 10 if there is interest.
General manager Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn have historically steered clear of players with character concerns, the report noted. One person close to the situation suggested the Jets “don’t want to deal with it.” Glenn deflected questions about Sorsby, saying, “I’m focused on the guys that we have here now,” pointing to Geno Smith, Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook and rookie Cade Klubnik.
Beyond the supplemental-draft possibility, the Jets have explored veteran options — including a brief flirtation with Russell Wilson — and remain positioned to pursue quarterback prospects in the 2027 draft if they pass on Sorsby, according to the report.
