Brewers News: Lorenzo Cain Goes Down, Could Miss More Time

The Milwaukee Brewers may head into their final game of the regular season against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday without their entire starting outfield. Lorenzo Cain, who was already fighting through a leg injury over the past week, collided with Colorado’s Drew Butera at the plate as he tried to extend the Brewer’s lead to 3-1 in the top of the ninth inning. Cain was ruled out at the plate, and he may be out for a bit longer too.

Although he told the media that he would do everything he can to play in Sunday’s regular season finale, the clear move here is to sit him and get him as ready as possible for Tuesday’s wild card game against the Washington Nationals. Milwaukee has already lost their other two starting outfielders in Christian Yelich and Ryan Braun to injuries, though they are optimistic that Braun will be back on Tuesday.

Braun has been dealing with a calf sprain that he suffered on a broken-bat RBI in Friday’s loss to the Rockies.

Yelich’s injury probably stings the most, as they lost the MVP candidate for the season early in September when he fouled a ball off of his knee, fracturing his kneecap as a result.

While the Brewers will likely be without Cain and Braun on Sunday, it’s still a must-win for them as they are still in a heated race for the NL Central with the St. Louis Cardinals, who are one game head of Milwaukee and have also lost their last two games. If the Brewers win and Cardinals lose their final game, there could be a tiebreaker between the two teams on Monday.
