Training camp opened Wednesday at the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus, and Browns reporter Daniel Oyefusi is providing daily updates on standouts, position battles, depth-chart movement and the quarterback room. The team said it will continue to update coverage through the start of the preseason week on Aug. 13.
Coach Todd Monken said the quarterback competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders will keep both splitting first-team reps in practice. On Day 1, Watson took all first-team reps but struggled; two throws during 11-on-11 drills were intercepted by cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Damarri Mathis, according to Oyefusi.
Monken declined to set a timeline for naming a starter and indicated he plans to play starters in the preseason, which could heighten evaluation periods for the competition. The quarterback decision remains the central question heading into camp, as does which players on the roster bubble will make the final 53.
Additional practice observations included tight end Harold Fannin Jr. missing the offseason workout program after groin surgery and being cleared to play two weeks ago. Fourth-year offensive lineman Dawand Jones lined up at left tackle with the starting unit while 2026 first-round pick Spencer Fano worked with the second team. Mathis and defensive tackle Kalia Davis left practice early and did not return with apparent injuries, and rookie tight end Joe Royer was absent for personal reasons, Oyefusi reported.
Veteran defensive end Jadeveon Clowney visited the Browns, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported; Clowney, 33, had a two-year stint in Cleveland from 2021-22 and recorded 11 sacks. The team also finalized contract moves this offseason, agreeing to a three-year, $48 million extension with Grant Delpit and a two-year, $62.2 million extension with Denzel Ward. On his extension, Ward said, “I’m a Cleveland kid through and through and this is where I’m at, and this is where I want to be.”
