Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken addressed the media this week but declined to provide clarity regarding the future of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz or the team’s starting quarterback situation. Monken, who was recently appointed as the Browns’ head coach, stated it would be “inappropriate” to comment on Schwartz’s status with the organization. Schwartz reportedly indicated he would not return to the team, though the Browns have not issued an official statement confirming his departure.
Schwartz joined Cleveland as defensive coordinator ahead of the 2023 season and played a key role in guiding the defense to one of the league’s top statistical performances. Despite speculation surrounding his apparent exit, Monken emphasized that no decision had been formalized and said discussions with all staff members were ongoing.
“I have great respect for Jim,” Monken said during the news conference. “At this stage, it’s not proper for me to speak for someone else or speculate on staffing changes before we’ve finalized anything.”
In addition to questions about the coaching staff, Monken was asked about the team’s plans at quarterback, particularly regarding Shedeur Sanders. Sanders, who joined the team last offseason, remains a potential candidate for the starting role, but Monken declined to commit to him as the team’s primary quarterback moving forward.
“We’re evaluating all options and every player on this roster,” Monken said. “The quarterback position is obviously critical, but I’m not going to make any declarations today. We’ve got time and a process to follow.”
Monken’s hiring marks a new chapter for the Browns following another up-and-down season. The team finished short of postseason expectations, prompting several changes in leadership, including the decision to bring in Monken. With questions still lingering around key coaching and roster decisions, the coming weeks are expected to be pivotal as the Browns look to stabilize their direction ahead of the new season.
