What Thomas Tuchel Needs To Do To Turn Borussia Dortmund Around

Tuchel has some work to do to get Dortmund back on track.

Thomas Tuchel is the man that has been tasked with rebuilding a winner at Borussia Dortmund and while there is plenty of work to do, he will have a clean slate as well as plenty of help as he tries to put together a team capable of doing much better than this year’s current campaign. Dortmund has been a bit of a disaster this season as they are currently eighth in the Bundesliga table.

Tuchel will undoubtedly spend the majority of time getting acclimated with his new surroundings and becoming familiar with what it will take to field a winner over the next couple of weeks, but the fans are already looking forward to the product he will put together and the potential starting 11 he will have ready for the first day of next season. Here is a look at five moves the new Dortmund manager should make this summer.

Hold On To Ciro Immobile

There are a number of teams supposedly keen on acquiring the 25-year-old striker Immobile from Dortmund and while he has struggled to find his top form with the club, he could be a very valuable piece moving forward. Immobile has been given the benefit of the doubt by the fans and with a change in tactics and a couple of moves to help build around his skill set he could enjoy a renaissance with the club this season. Dortmund has just 40 goals in 30 games this season but a better setting for Immobile could change that.

Move Mats Hummels

There are a number of potential suitors that have shown interest in Hummels over the last year and while some fans will be worried to see him leave, the reality is that they simply don’t need him anymore. Dortmund is stacked at the position, already with Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Neven Subotic locked in and they are more than capable of holding down the defense with Matthias Ginter. Both Manchester United and Barcelona are supposedly willing to pay a substantial price to acquire Hummels and Tuchel would be wise to cash in now. And who knows, maybe he can either do something with the cash they get back or maybe they’ll get a player in return.

Acquire A World-Class Goalkeeper

Dortmund fans cheered on Australian International goalkeeper Mitch Langerak when he started instead of the injured Roman Weidenfeller and the reality is that a change in goal would be a welcome one for a team that has had to overcome mediocre to less than average goalkeeping for some time now. Langerak isn’t a terrible option but Tuchel would be wise to acquire a top goalkeeper in order to help give his team a better chance moving forward to next season.

Keep Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang In The Fold

One of the most troubling things that Dortmund fans have had to worry over is the potential exit of their top striker in Aubameyang, who scored 21 goals this season. The team only has 40 in total. Aubameyang has garnered interest from a number of clubs, including Arsenal most recently but his potential transfer would really hinder Tuchel’s rebuilding attempts. He is much better off holding on to him for now to lead the Dortmund attack next season.

Move Ilkay Gundogan

There is no denying the value of the German international and with at least a handful of teams interested in acquiring his services, now is the perfect time to cash in on both his potential and talent by moving him. Tuchel will have to make some tough decisions in order to turn things around at Dortmund and with a chance that Gundogan would opt out of his contract the following year anyways, it makes a lot more sense for Tuchel to move him now and capitalize on the opportunity to bring in some money that will be useful when he needs to make some other moves.
