Facing 27 shots and making seven saves over 90 minutes, he was named man of the match and left the field in tears. His Instagram following jumped from about 56,000 to roughly 5 million after the game, ESPN reported.
The display capped a 19-year career that has taken him across Portugal, Cape Verde, Moldova, Angola, Cyprus and Slovakia, with at least 200 matches recorded by available statistics, according to ESPN. His lone club trophy is the 2018-19 Cypriot Cup with AEL Limassol. Vozinha has represented Cape Verde at senior level since 2012, and this World Cup — the nation’s first — stands as the biggest stage of his career, ESPN said.
Born in Mindelo, a town of about 70,000 people, Vozinha was nicknamed “Little Voice” and initially trained as a striker, the story said. The report noted he turned professional at age 25 and made his debut for local side Batuque in 2007, before plodding a journeyman path through clubs including Progresso in Angola, Zimbru in Moldova, Gil Vicente in Portugal, AEL Limassol in Cyprus and AS Trencin in Slovakia. The match in Atlanta produced Cape Verde’s first ever World Cup point in the country’s debut tournament, ESPN reported. Vozinha’s form in qualifying was noted as well: he kept seven clean sheets in 10 qualifying matches and conceded eight goals overall, four of which came in a single game against Cameroon, per ESPN.
