CFL Betting: Week 5 Preview & Picks

CFL

The rivalries will ramp up in Week 5 of the CFL season with five games on the schedule stretching from Wednesday through Monday. The matchups include rematches featuring the teams that were in the Eastern and Western Semi-Finals. The defending Grey Cup champion Ottawa Redblacks will be in a tough spot with two games in five days as they continue to search for their first win of the 2017 season. Here is your CFL rundown for Week 5 of the season.

Wednesday July 19th, 2017

Montreal Alouettes @ Ottawa Redblacks

CFL Betting Odds: Ottawa -3

The Redblacks are overdue for a win. It won’t be easy against a Montreal team that just shocked the Calgary Stampeders for a 30-23 win at home. The Alouettes held the high-scoring Calgary offense to 23 points. Now they get Ottawa at the perfect time with the Redblacks still trying to figure things out following a disappointing start. Montreal has a legitimate chance to win this one on the road. Even if they fall short, they could cover the three points as the visitor.

Pick: Montreal +3

Thursday July 20th, 2017

Edmonton Eskimos @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats

CFL Betting Odds: Hamilton -10

The Redblacks are struggling. The Tiger-Cats are an absolute mess. Hamilton ranks dead last in the CFL in points per game, points allowed per game, yards per game and yards allowed per game. Now they have to host the lone remaining undefeated team in the CFL this week. Mike Reilly and company still haven’t hit their stride but they have managed to do enough to record three straight wins. The Eskimos should improve to 4-0 this week but 10 points is a lot to cover on the road against a desperate Tiger-Cats team. Edmonton wins but Hamilton will find a way to cover at home.

Pick: Hamilton +10

Friday July 21st, 2017

Winnipeg Blue Bombers @ BC Lions

CFL Betting Odds: BC -8.5

The rematch of the West Semi-Final between Winnipeg and BC should be one of the marquee matchups of the week. Travis Lulay looked good in place of an injured Jonathon Jennings last week but he will face a tough test against the Blue Bombers. Fortunately for the Lions, their defense appears to be their biggest strength so they should be able to keep Matt Nichols in check for the most part. The problem with the line is that 8.5 points is still too much to give up considering Winnipeg is fairly healthy. His should be an entertaining game with the Blue Bombers at least keeping it close on the road.

Pick: Winnipeg +8.5

Saturday July 22nd, 2017

Saskatchewan Roughriders @ Calgary Stampeders

CFL Betting Odds: Calgary -11.5

The Roughriders are coming off their first win of the season at home. Now they have to go to Calgary to play the best team in the CFL. The Stampeders are coming off a disappointing loss to Montreal that should make them even more motivated to bounce back with a convincing win. Bo Levi Mitchell and the offense have a lot more to give. Look for Calgary to air it out and absolutely torched the Saskatchewan defense in front of their home crowd in the most lopsided matchup of Week 5.

Pick: Calgary -11.5

Monday July 24th, 2017

Ottawa Redblacks @ Toronto Argonauts

CFL Betting Odds: Toronto -1.5

The Redblacks are in an incredibly tough spot this week. Five nights after hosting the Alouettes, Ottawa will visit another East division rival in Toronto. Ricky Ray and company will have plenty of time to prepare for this matchup and that extra game planning should pay off at home.

Ottawa has had a really tough time this season as they are one just two teams that has yet to register a win so far this season (they’re 0-3-1 while Hamilton is 0-3-0). The defense has been deplorable for the Redblacks as they’ve allowed a whopping 123 points so far – by far the most in the CFL. That’s nearly 31 points per game.

The Redblacks will keep it close. However, it’s unrealistic to expect Ottawa to recover in time to take down a talented Toronto team on the road in their second of two games in less than one full week.

Pick: Toronto -1.5
