Chiefs are Trading Marcus Peters to Rams

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

If you thought you’d get to the weekend without any major NFL news, think again. The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams are finalizing a trade that will send Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters to Southern California. There’s no official word yet on what Kansas City will receive in return.

According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs will receive a “package” of draft picks for Peters. Peters is entering his fourth year in the league, made the Pro Bowl twice and was named All Pro once. He should have made the Pro Bowl last year, but his reputation and on-the-field antics hurt his cause. It’s obviously what also led Kansas City to want to move the 2015 first round pick. He was the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year.

In his three seasons, Peters is crafting a potential Hall of Fame resume. He already has 19 interceptions and led the NFL in pick return yardage in two of the last three seasons. Last year he stole five passes, had nine passes defended, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 46 tackles.

Peters is one of the most talented corners in the league, but has issues with his temper and self control. Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has dealt with players like him before, turning a guy like Aqib Talib into a perennial Pro Bowler in spite of his penchant for getting in trouble on and off the field.

This is the second major trade for the Chiefs this off-season. Just a few weeks ago they moved quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins in exchange for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third round pick. Obviously the Chiefs feel comfortable enough with Fuller at corner that they can cut bait with Peters.

For the Rams, this will likely end any chance of Trumaine Johnson returning to the team. He’s been Los Angeles’ top corner for the last two seasons and played under the franchise tag in both. He’ll command a high salary on the open market. It’s one the Rams won’t have to worry about paying now with the addition of Peters.

Peters is still playing on his rookie contract and, because he was a first round pick, the Rams will have a fifth-year option they will most certainly use. He’s due to count $3.049 million against the cap this season.
