College Football: Championship Week Rundown

Clemson Tigers

After a long college football season, Championship Week is finally here with the conference titles up for grabs across the nation this week. If last week was any indication, there could be plenty of closely contested games with the potential for multiple upsets in Week 14. Here is a look at the games on the schedule for Championship Week.

Pac-12 Championship

#14 Stanford vs. #11 USC

Odds: USC -3

Stanford running back Bryce Love will look to complete an impressive season when he heads down the road to Santa Clara for the Pac-12 Championship game. The Cardinal lost to USC earlier in the year, so this sets up as a revenge game with a conference title on the line. Trojans quarterback Sam Darnold struggled against Stanford but USC still managed to pick up the victory. It will be interesting to see if Darnold bounces back in the second meeting. He will need to be at his best for the Trojans to sweep the season series with the Cardinal.

AAC Championship

#16 Memphis @ #12 UCF

Odds: UCF -7.5

The Knights have an opportunity to complete a perfect season by taking down Memphis in the AAC Championship game. UCF beat the Tigers 40-13 earlier this year to clinch a berth in a New Year’s Six Bowl so they should feel confident in their chances of taking care of business this week. The rumors that UCF head coach Scott Frost continue to circle around the program but that won’t be a distraction once the weekend rolls around. The Knights are focused on finishing what they started with a chance to add a conference championship in what has already been an impressive year.

Big 12 Championship

#10 TCU vs. #2 Oklahoma

Odds: Oklahoma -6.5

Oklahoma blew away TCU in the last meeting between these Big 12 Championship contenders 38-20. Now the Horned Frogs will attempt to get the last laugh in the more important meeting of the two. If TCU is going to have any chance at the upset then they will need to slow down Heisman trophy favorite Baker Mayfield. Mayfield has been incredible for the Sooners all year and can cap off a Heisman-worthy campaign by adding another trophy to his mantle ahead of a College Football Playoff appearance.

SEC Championship

#6 Georgia vs. #4 Auburn

Odds: Auburn -2.5

Auburn came out on top in a 40-17 win over the Bulldogs when these teams met in mid-November. Nobody doubts the Tigers anymore following last week’s Iron Bowl win over Alabama. Georgia will want to avoid an embarrassment with a legitimate shot at taking home some hardware but it won’t be easy. The status of Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson will dominate the conversation heading in to this game. If he is good to play, then the Tigers will be expected to take care of business again this week with an SEC Championship game victory.

ACC Championship

#7 Miami vs. #1 Clemson

Odds: Clemson -7.5

Miami is coming off a shocking loss to Pittsburgh last week. However, the Hurricanes could still make their way in to the College Football Playoff with an ACC Championship game win. Like the SEC Championship, this game is basically serving as a playoff quarterfinal with the winner likely headed to the CFP. Clemson is ranked No. 1 for a reason and has been absolutely destroying teams while getting healthy again over the last few weeks. Miami will be in tough to stop them. If the Hurricanes could pull off the upset, it would mark the ultimate redemption following last week’s letdown.

Big Ten Championship

#3 Wisconsin vs. #8 Ohio State

Odds: Ohio State -5.5

The status of Buckeyes quarterback J.T. Barrett is in doubt after he suffered a knee injury last week. Ohio State is still a small favorite but Barrett’s status will be important to keep an eye on. The Buckeyes are at their best with a healthy Barrett performing at a high level. The Badgers are capable of pushing them even with Barrett under center. Wisconsin has repeatedly shown the ability to come up big in important games and find a way to perform at their highest level when it counts the most. It will be interesting to see if they can shock Ohio State and clinch a Big Ten Championship with another playoff spot potentially on the line in this game.
