The College Football Playoff board of directors talks about separating sports from the NCAA

College football is debating a new method of operating as the world of collegiate athletics continues to change due to conference realignment and the start of the name, image, and likeness (NIL) era. The College Football Playoff’s board of management addressed the potential of transitioning to a model with the CFP as its head during a Monday Zoom call, according to ESPN. This would include college football functioning outside the NCAA’s purview. There hasn’t yet been a formal announcement, though.

After the about five-minute discussion regarding removing college football from the NCAA, no more action was anticipated. The notion of college football functioning separately from the NCAA has been brought up over the past several months, particularly as the idea of “super leagues” has evolved. The meeting allegedly also covered the topic of altering the College Football Playoff’s present structure before the current contract expires after the 2025 season.
