College Football: Ranked Teams On Upset Alert For Week 7

Upset Alert

The Michigan Wolverines came crashing down to earth with a major upset loss to the rival Michigan State Spartans in a defeat that might very well have ended any shot they had at contending for a national championship this season. But that wasn’t the biggest college football upset of last week.

There has been a slew of 30-point favorites that have completely whiffed this season and we can add another one to the pile after last week. The Oklahoma Sooners, who closed as high as a 31.5-point favorite, completely flopped against the Iowa State Cyclones. The Cyclones were visiting Norman and using a backup quarterback, yet they somehow stunned Oklahoma and left with the win.

The upset alerts continue this week with a handful of top 25 teams facing difficult matchups. Here is a look at the top ranked teams on upset alert heading in to Week 7 of the college football season.

#9 Ohio State Buckeyes @ Nebraska Cornhuskers

Saturday, 7:30 PM ET

Nebraska’s chances of winning the Big Ten West took a big hit with Saturday’s home loss to Wisconsin but they have the potential to bounce back in a big way this week. The Huskers defense was gashed for 353 rushing yards in the loss to the Badgers, so it won’t be difficult to figure out what they need to do better next week. Ohio State embarrassed Nebraska 62-3 when these teams met last year, so this will be a redemption game for the Huskers at home. The Buckeyes offense has been on a roll the last few weeks but this is a spot where they can get lulled to sleep. Don’t be surprised if they keep this game close and maybe even push the Buckeyes to the brink with a potential upset alert for Week 7. The Buckeyes have a big showdown with the Penn State Nittany Lions next, so they might be looking ahead to that matchup on October 28th.

Pick: Nebraska +24

#10 Auburn Tigers @ LSU Tigers

Saturday, 3:30 PM ET

Auburn’s schedule is about to get a lot tougher when they visit LSU this week in the first of three straight on the road. Auburn beat LSU by five last year when a potential last-second touchdown pass by Danny Etling didn’t count because time had expired. LSU should play them just as tight this year at home. Ed Orgeron’s side is coming off a big win over the Florida Gators last week and it shouldn’t be a surprised to anybody if they upset Auburn on Saturday.

Pick: LSU +7

#11 Miami Hurricanes vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Saturday, 3:30 PM ET

Miami has won four in a row heading in to this contest, including a close, last-second win over rival Florida State the last time they were on the field. One week after having their matchup with Georgia Tech postponed, they get the Yellow Jackets at home in what could be a tough test. The key here for the Hurricanes will be to keep their focus after upending their big rival. The Hurricanes are still undefeated and could get into the College Football Playoff picture but they can’t have a letdown after such a big win.

Miami is 9-0 straight up and 8-1 against the spread over its last nine games but a tough schedule could catch up to them this week. The Yellow Jackets will throw everything they have at the Hurricanes this week and while they might not win straight up they should be able to cover at home.

Pick: Georgia Tech +6.5

#13 USC Trojans vs. Utah Utes

Saturday, 8:00 PM ET

This is an absolutely massive game for the Pac-12 South, with every team in the division sitting on one-loss heading in to Week 7. The Utes just fell out of the top-25 following a three-point loss at home to Stanford on Saturday but they will be motivated to bounce back in a big way with an opportunity to earn a measure of redemption on the road at USC. The Trojans have won 13 in a row at home so they will be tough to beat. That said, USC is giving up 13 points as the favorite so it shouldn’t be a shock if Utah covers on the road this weekend.

Pick: Utah +13
