Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen has spoken positively about veteran quarterback Philip Rivers amid ongoing speculation about the team’s starting signal-caller. Rivers, who has not played in an NFL game since the 2020 season, has drawn interest and praise from within the organization, but Steichen stopped short of naming him the starter for any upcoming games.
During a press conference, Steichen highlighted Rivers’ knowledge of the game and command in meetings and on the practice field. He commended the 42-year-old quarterback for his ability to quickly reacclimate to the Colts’ system, emphasizing his leadership qualities and experience. However, when asked directly about the possibility of Rivers starting, Steichen declined to provide a definitive answer.
Rivers played 17 NFL seasons, including his final year with the Colts in 2020, before announcing his retirement. In that season, he led the team to an 11-5 record and a playoff appearance. Since retiring, Rivers has remained active in football through coaching at the high school level.
Steichen explained that decisions regarding the starting quarterback role will be made based on practice evaluations and overall team needs. The Colts have faced multiple changes at the quarterback position this season, leading to speculation about whether the team might return to a familiar veteran presence in Rivers.
“Philip’s command and presence have been excellent,” Steichen said. “He’s a pro’s pro, and the guys respect him. We’re taking it one day at a time.”
The Colts have not yet announced who will start under center in their next game. The uncertainty adds intrigue as the team looks to maintain momentum late in the regular season. Whether Rivers eventually takes the field again remains to be seen, but his involvement with the team has already drawn considerable attention across the league.
The Colts are expected to provide further updates as the week progresses and game preparations continue.
