Commanders still have boxes to check after free agency rush

The Washington Commanders exit the initial wave of free agency with progress made, but with several key roster questions still to resolve before the 2026 season. Team decision-makers have addressed portions of the depth chart, yet significant needs remain at wide receiver, cornerback, and center as the offseason moves toward the next phase.

At receiver, Washington continues to search for additional help on the perimeter and in the slot. The goal is to strengthen the passing game with more consistent separation, reliability on third down, and explosive-play potential. The current group has pieces in place, but the front office is expected to keep evaluating options through the rest of free agency, potential trades, and especially the upcoming NFL draft. Securing another dependable target would help balance the offense and provide flexibility in how the unit is aligned and schemed.

Cornerback is another position under close review. Washington wants to solidify its secondary with more depth and clarity in its coverage roles. The modern NFL places a premium on versatile defensive backs who can hold up on the outside, play inside when needed, and tackle in space. The Commanders are likely to examine a range of options, from veteran additions who can step in immediately to draft prospects who offer long-term upside. Shoring up the cornerback group is viewed as important to improving pass defense, red zone performance, and overall consistency on that side of the ball.

Along the offensive line, center stands out as a priority. Washington is looking to stabilize the interior of the line with a reliable presence who can handle protections, communicate effectively at the line of scrimmage, and contribute in both pass protection and the run game. The center position often serves as the anchor of the blocking unit, and the team’s decision there will influence how the rest of the line is constructed. Whether through a veteran acquisition or a draft selection, identifying the right fit at center remains a central task.

As the offseason continues, the Commanders will weigh their remaining needs against the options available in the draft and the later stages of free agency. The early rush of signings around the league has narrowed some choices but also clarified where each team stands. For Washington, the checklist is straightforward: strengthen the receiving corps, deepen and upgrade the cornerback room, and secure stability at center. How effectively those boxes are checked in the weeks and months ahead will help define the team’s readiness for the coming season and shape expectations for its performance.
